His Epistemology is useful if you want to understand Hume/Kant and later Anglo thinkers, but his politics and overall philosophy are pretty bad imo. I much prefer Spinoza/Hume/Leibniz if we're talking Early Moderns.

Funny you should say that, because that is my exact situation as well. Its weird you felt the need to bring it up though. Calling Hegel "basic" is the last thing anyone who has ever read Hegel would say. Even academics I know who specialize in Hegel will say hes nearly impossible to break into without significant effort and secondary commentary.
