I'm pretty okay at French (Canada) and I would suggest a few things:

1. Look up French courses. The Canadian Government has a good one, and so does the US-France Embassy.

2. Set a goal for yourself. Maybe book a trip to somewhere French, or book a date to sit a French proficiency test, or something like that.

3. Learn the pronunciations of french letters. It's surprisingly hard. Also learn how different combinations of letters affect sound.

4. Start learning vocabulary. Duolingo is okay for French but way too slow unless you're dumb. Get the 1000 most common French words and turn them into a flashcard or anki deck.

5. Try and practice 20 words a day, both new and old.

6. Start learning grammar concurrently. French grammar is pretty easy. Learn the present tense, then the past tense, then the future tense, then the imperfect Don't do the subjunctive until you're very comfortable with French (you can do full sentences on the fly).

6. Learn the conjugations for Etre, Avoir, and the other irregulars. Do them separately since they're confusing and used very often.

7. Start reading simple books. Le Petit Prince is a pretty good start since it was made for kids. Jules Verne is a good next step. Try to identify the tenses, and add any words you used.

8. Start writing. Just a few sentences every day. Maybe start a journal?

9. Start speaking in French. It's hard. You'll sound like a dumb american (or the stereotypical tourist from wherever) for a while. Relearn your pronunciations.
- Thinking to yourself in French is pretty good. You'll think slower, but its very good practice.

10. Keep reading, keep writing, keep speaking. At this point, you're somewhere between an A2 and B2 in French. Once you get to a B1, start doing more complicated grammar, reading more complicated books, and talking to actual french people. There are language pen pal sites you can find to practice writing your french and speaking it with actual french people. Do this. It helps a lot.

11. After B1 - B2, French becomes less about learning new things, but honing and practising the skills you already have. Keep doing this.

Good Luck!
