Genius of the Birds by Jennifer Ackerman
Saving Jemima by Julie Zickefoose
The Bluebird Effect by Julie Zickefoose
Alex and Me by Dr. Pepperberg
Bird Brains: The Intelligence of Crows, Ravens, Magpies, and Jays by Candace Savage

I have other books on my shelf like A Hummingbird in My House: The Story of Squeak by Arnette Heidcamp, but I have yet to start it.

I can also list picture books if further interested.

There are many good picture books on birds. My favorite ones are by Molly Brett. I like Tom Tit Goes to Home and The Party that Grew a lot.

Martha by Gennady Spirin is also good.
More by IC Springman is quite profound.
Memoirs of a Parrot by Devin Sicillian is soulful.
Owl Moon by Jane Yolen is a classic.
Owl Babies by Martin Waddell is a classic.
Stellaluna by Janell Cannon is a classic. Even though its focus is on a bat, birds play an integral role in its mesmerizing story.
The Conference of the Birds by Demi is nice too.
Matt Sewell's picture books on birds are also interesting, but his style is a preferred taste.
Carl R. Sams photography is good. I like For the Love of Birds. His other works are nice too.

Also, there is a nice hardcover book called Hiroshige: Birds and Flowers, which focuses on Hiroshige's woodblock paintings of birds.

Also, I recommend looking into the board game Wingspan. It is quite popular, and I hope families play that more than trash like Monopoly.

First illustration was from Tom Tit Moves House*. I made a typo in title because I am tired.

>what birds are doing and why
So it's not about what it's like to be a bird. The title is a complete lie. This doesn't tell you what it's like being a bird but what birds do, as if that tells you what it's like. I've read about sex, seen sex, but I don't know what sex is like. Where's the ontology of bird, phenomenology of bird, zoosemiotics of bird, etc?
