I'm going to make a thread about a book. Here it is.

The book is Wolf Totem, by Jiang Rong.
Now, I doubt if anyone knows the answer to this question, but is the translation by Goldblatt just bad or is Rong simply a shitty author? He's well known here and the book won the Man Asian literary prize (honestly I don't know what that entails, exactly) but thus far it's horrible. I wanna give it a chance because the only Chinese lit I've ever read is the obligatory Art of War/ Analects, but if there's not a superior translation I'm moving on to some effing Chabon.

don't feel bad

like just today i resolved to not make any more jokes about your vagina.

it's probably a very nice vagina with completely proportional labia that doesn't look gross at all. i don't know, i've never seen it.

I always thought "Man Booker" was some guy's name

The Man Asian Prize sounds like something Fabulous would furtively access from behind a proxy while his mom and stepdad were fast asleep

Yiddish Popo. I've only read a couple of his before and I can't say I love his work, but I like it. I kinda feel like I might like Chabon himself more than his actual writing but anyway I think he tells a good story.

You shouldn't read translations of Chinese texts. All prose and meaning is lost.

Settled. I'm only using this book to kill wasps and horseflies from this day on. Thank you. You've freed me.

I have that kicking around somewhere, I haven't gotten to it yet but if you make a thread about Your Thoughts on it I'll probably try to save it from page 15. I loved Kavalier and Clay because I was a pants-shitting sad comic book nerd as a kid but beyond that I def know what you mean about liking the guy more than his work.
