~ Questions that don't deserve their own thread ~

Do you need...
...writing advice?
...book recs?
...needlessly caustic opinions?

If so, ask your stupid question in this thread.

If you haven't read Childhood's End by Arthur Clarke, you should check it out. Just keep in mind, the characters are decidedly plain, in order to focus on the rest of the plot.

I have been contemplating getting into philosophy for a while now, but the fear of ending up blindly using other people's answers to philosophical questions instead of coming up with my own has kept me from it. When it comes to such fields, the prospect of lacking original thought scares me more than that of relative ignorance.
Do you use any specific methods to avoid that?
Of course, I expect what I read to have an influence on me, I just don't want to risk turning into a parrot.

I could use something similar. I made a video, off a script, where I tried to strike a middle ground between not taking myself too seriously but not being edgy either. The process was way more fun than I thought, and id like to do more. So to not suck, I'd appreciate feedback from you guys.

When it comes to wood working, there are books on it, but the best source for a specific project like that would be to look up youtube videos. Framing, screwing gluing, types of cuts, types of wood, etc. are online or in books, but I don't have a name for a particular one. Sorry anon. I just scrounge for the right tools and look at pictures of things I want it to be similar to and then sketch it on a legal pad.
>>18124575
The way to get around it is to integrate the knowledge you learn with the knowledge you have. Don't just take a given work at face value. Think about it. Ponder it. Compare it to other things you have read or thought. Make strange and new connections. We live on the shoulders of giants who, themselves, lived on the shoulders of giants.
>>18124690
Perceived value judgement of others. A story is supposed to be heard or read by an audience. You believe you have nothing to tell your audience, so even thinking about the idea of thinking of coming up with something feels hopeless. It's almost a self worth issue at that point. Depends what you want considering it’s such a broad period. Durant wrote a great overview of the period. Cambridge Medieval History is amazing too. Here are some more authors on medieval Western Europe and the Crusades:
Georges Duby
RW Southern
J. Ambrose Raftis / Edwin Brezette DeWindt etc.
Henri Pirenne
Jean de Wavrin
Gregory of Tours
William of Tyre
Jean de Joinville
Thomas Walsingham
Robert S Lopez
Charles Oman
Hans Eberhard Mayer
Steven Runciman
Also:
Ira M Lapidus
Marshall GS Hodgson
Aziz Ataya
Warren Treadgold

Okay I figured out I'll use this thread instead of shitting the board with a unique thread. I'm starting with the Greeks and I don't get why philosophers like Aristotle are using the word "God" in a singular instead of in the plural since they were polytheists. Is it a mistranslation? I know that some philosophers like Xenophanes defended monotheism and Socrates seems to be on a side of monotheism and against polytheism in the Eutyphro dialogue but still I think it matters what were their actual religious views were.

>> No.18131180

>>18131130
In the long run the first is going to produce more. The lasting effects of a poor diet are slow and sinister. But the second will probably have something far more profound to say. The first will have an easier time networking too. The second will probably have a bigger network of poorer people. I’ve seen this happen in the local music scene. The poor people have bigger audiences and better songs but the well off guys have fans that actually buy shit and the connections for gigs at better venues.
