Onto the second book of Stormlight Archives and... wow, Sanderson is really not good at writing epic highlights/climaxes.
Comparing him to Robert Jordan (as he literally finished Jordan's series), Jordan was just so much better at these insanely hype story moments all throughout Wheel of Time. Stormlight Archives, however, doesn't have those moments (so far). Every time the story ramps up to this epic climax, I feel nothing. Sanderson isn't good at it.

Sure, Sanderson is great at character banter, humour not spending 50 paragraphs describing the local grass, but not great at those huge climaxes.

Anybody else feel this way? Or do I just need to keep reading?

>wow, Sanderson is really not good at writing epic highlights/climaxes.Comparing him to Robert Jordan (as he literally finished Jordan's series), Jordan was just so much better at these insanely hype story moments all throughout Wheel of Time

wut. Jordan's climaxes are horrid. The "epic" idea is there and there's some excitement because of that but they're all hilariously rushed, usually spring up from nowhere with little build up and sometimes even against main story thrust of the book. They're an asspull galore with a failure to utilize magic system in interesting way and Team Rocket as, roadblocks to bop at the end of each book. The forsaken are basically strangers to the cast so there's little of personal conflict between the two and story fails to 1) even make relevant most of the cast during the climaxes 2) couple these with some sort of character issues/development. Even the epilogues are comically bad as narrator has to take the reins and quickly sum up in a page what should have been a wind down of 20. Say what you will about Sanderson but he's eons above Jordhack.

There is literally not a single good reason as to why my Space Fantasy story cannot have Lightsabers as a prominent weapon.

I don't care if people think I'm ripping off Jedi. Lucas shouldn't get to keep such an awesome idea to himself because he first put it on screen.

Now we have tonnes of anime threads on /lit/, all complaining about anime on /lit/.
Both sides are retarded, and should've just ignored the fucking OP image, because no one looks at it anyway. We just need to wait it out until the next FoTM meme.

Too early in the story to say. It's starting out as an antagonistic pairing of a stuck up protégé necromancer noble daughter and her buffoonish but tenacious bodyguard working together. My guess is they'll slowly come around to begrudging respect for each other that turns into romance. The interhouse politics are also just getting started, a challenge to a duel here, formal dinner invitations that might serve to poison the guests there. The basics. The Empire is presided over by an Immortal God Emperor who has been gone for thousands of years and the houses are competing to become regent of the empire for the next several centuries/millennia.

Am I the only one who dislikes hard magic systems like the one found in Sanderson's books?
All of these inane names, convulted rules, and infodumps about how it works, simply bog the story. When I read a story, I don't care about the metamagics behind the fireball the wizard threw; I simply care about the impact of the fight the wizard had on the story.
Unfortunately, most writers nowadays, seem to be more obsessed with writing about magic rather than a good story.

Sanderson and his imitators are written for people who think of settings in terms of systems to be manipulated and solved. They're the inevitable end product of generations raised on fantasy as an end to RPG mechanics. It's a very un-"literary" approach to storytelling and it misses the point of why a lot of people enjoy these stories, but at this point I think it's clear that the subgenre has consistent appeal to a certain demographic. It's pointless to try and tell and tell somebody they're wrong to enjoy something, especially when they mainly enjoy it because it does something fairly unique.

I recently read Alpha Protocol by Duncan M. Hamilton.
I picked this up expecting a schlocky MilSF series, and sort of got that, but also got a pretty decent first contact story which was a lot less schlocky than anything kindle unlimited offers has any right to be.
To start off, it actually has characterization. The main character in particular is a pretty interesting contrast, in that he's significantly over-educated for his posting, yet at the same time he's completely out of his depth. He is an Officer on his second posting, which is out in the proverbial boonies due to getting caught up in the bad end of politics on his first. Most of the plot is him trying to navigate his way through complex situations where his extensive education isn't worth the paper it's printed on.
The climax was a bit too cheesey for my taste, but not enough to detract significantly from what came before that, all in all, it was way better than I expected and I was disappointed to find out that there's no second book published yet. This is a pretty solid entry into modern sci-fi.

I really like sword and sorcery, and non-medieval settings

>> No.18116187

>>18116020
I haven't really read much Sword and Sorcery aside from the stuff that everyone has read, but the Kormak Saga by William King is pretty good. It's mostly short stories, so quality varies a bit. The first one, Guardian of the Dawn, is pretty great though.
As far as non-medieval fantasy settings go you'd probably want to look at the Gunpowder fantasy subgenre, so Powder Mage would be a pretty good entry point.
Another would be the William King Gotrek and Felix novels. Despite the fact that they're EU material for the Warhammer Tabletop game, they're actually pretty good. Granted, it takes a bit for King to hit his stride given he's working with characters he didn't create, but once he gets going they're a great ride. Sadly, being EU material, other authors take over eventually and their stories aren't as good.
The Book of Swords series by Fred Saberhagen kind of qualifies? The immediate setting IS medieval, but the world isn't.
Another standout is the Draconis Memoria series by Anthony Ryan, with its quasi Age of Exploration setting.
Then you could try the Pillars of Reality series by Jack Campbell. I found it readable, but kind of dull and the prose (or lack thereof) just made it boring to read. Though I did like Campbells earlier sci-fi stuff so maybe it's just the content that bored me.

There's really not enough in either of those genres to recommend something that isn't talked about regularly but is also good, though. There's plenty of gunpowder fantasy series but most of them are awful. I don't know why the entire genre has been taken over by people like Django Wexler who just use it as a vehicle for asinine lesbian erotica.
As for S&S it's in the same boat but more so, there's plenty of it being put out but most of it is anime. Some of it like Rage of Dragons by Evan Winters is entertaining enough, but it's still anime. I think part of it simply comes down to what made older S&S so good was a result of the publication model, forcing the authors to write a specific way, which isn't replicated in long form novels.

>Zothique
Given that Clark Ashton Smith’s ‘Zothique’ stories were a clear influence on Jack Vance’s ‘Dying Earth’ series, it seems a little churlish that Vance once referred to Smith as a ‘very bad’ writer. Vance was quite right, of course (perhaps he was tired of comparisons being made): Smith’s writing is a triumph of style over substance, and his capacity for characterisation is limited. And yet his style is so outrageously ornate that it often transcends what it is describing, and characterisation is hardly essential to his project – indeed, it would detract from it. Human beings are just details in the tapestry.

It’s interesting to compare Smith and Vance: both affected an elaborate, colourful and deliberately archaic style, but Vance leavened his style with humour, narrative drive, humanity and a lightness of touch even at his most outrageous. For Smith, language was an end in itself. His orientalist fantasias are almost like pornography, in that they exist only to create an effect. Only in the pulps could Smith’s peculiar genius have flourished, freed from the constraints of ‘seriousness’, allowed to take any path it chose – as long as there was a ‘pay-off’...

Sounds like a pathetic beta, a Chad wouldn't care.

They probably would be if he took it slower. Seriously though the 'rape' boils down to her being a prude and wanting to take it slower and him having none of that in the heat of the moment.

Demonheart by JJ Egosi is my fav series right now.

Read the older one with male protagonist, it's entertaining enough.

Guy constantly fucks up. I wouldn’t even call him a hero. Just one in name only.

I had to look it up to refresh my memory, it's been years.
Series is called Sector General, first novel is Hospital Station by James White. I found it pretty imaginative and entertaining at the time, though I'm not sure how well it holds up.

Yeah but it was before that. She was wet for him, if he didn't force himself on her she would've spread her legs for him of her own free will.

Sounds like rape apologia. Doesn’t change the fact he was forceful, anon.

Does that book really start with the protagonist getting his penis back?

In one of my grad classes, we had to read a biography about a guy who had some of his vision restored after going blind at 3. There is a detailed scene where he visually scans his wife's full anatomy the first night they fuck after he gets his sight back and all the girls in the class FREAKED

I veered off topic. He raped someone in what he fought was a dream. At that point it's not a crime but some innocent fantasy.

The autarch's lineage demands that it pass itself on, remember? It's telling him that he needs to find someone else to take the alzabo and eat his brain because he knows he's about to die. I don't remember if the autarchy continues to live within him after that resurrection.

Did we really read the same story? That woman’s life was destroyed and not to mention the stigma the daughter faced.

It starts really great, the long descriptions of his illness were really something. After getting transported to another world, getting cured and then the rape it goes to shit. He keeps blaming himself, wallowing in sorrow and denying reality (his coping mechanism is pretending that it's all a dream, even weeks later and denying the existence of the Land). He's really reactive and weak willed.
Dropped it without finishing the first book so maybe it gets better, but it was so fucking dull.

It doesn’t. That much, I can assure you.

Also IIRC he's possibly resurrected by the angel/ship/ship's captain/furball, that time. But it might also be the claw, or it might be the Hierodules. It might be that Sev is incapable of dying because he's one of the images they project, like when they conjured Malrubius and Triskele.
