Uh, one is historical materialism - the idea that the way the economy works is the driving force behind how humans organise society. I.e hunter gatherer economy, agrarian economy, industrial economy were the defining factors of the way of life in those eras.

Another is he likes Hegel so he thinks political thought always goes through stages of thesis, antithesis and synthesis.

I.e. some dude has an idea, another dude doesn't like it so has the opposite idea, they fight for a while and then a third guy comes along and agrees with both of them, and makes a new idea they both agree with.
