Holy fuck anon, I was helping a friend's kid on holiday in America. Not only did the twelve year old have some trouble working out how much you get paid per hour and what a half hour would cost, the mom was freaking out I knew how to help the kid. She thought my friend was a mathematical genius because he'd been helping the kid since primary when "it got hard". The kid was doing fractions FFS. The really bizarre part was that the mom could work out taxes and tipping so she definitely wasn't completely retarded, but from the way the worksheet was written I think they expected twelve year olds to have problems with division.

I'm in a top masters of math program and what goes on here blows 99% of the world out of the water. Asians struggle past undergrad, they are not creative thinkers. Program is mostly whites, indians, arabs, and iranians. Also non americans thinking they are geniuses because their 12 year olds learn trig or whatever, lmfao, who fucking cares. If they go into a discipline that doesn't use math its pointless, if they go into one they'll graduate at the same final level as american college kids in the same discipline. If they go into higher maths it makes zero difference again. I taught myself calculus off of khan academy at age 20 when I decided to go back to school. I finished in a few months. Ching Chong who learned it at 14 still scored lower than me

Not gonna be as smug as this guy but I work in the semiconductor industry and there is nothing really magical about Sinoeducation. Lots of my colleagues are Chinese, Middle Eastern or Indian and it's nothing fancy, they're just more hyperfocused on their ultra-specific niche than Westerners. If anything it's actually detrimental that we often have to look for tangential knowledge they could already have if they were more curious and less hard headed about only following what they "should" know.

To be fair, Khan Academy is pretty damn good at teaching the basics. You have to move on from it at some point when covering more advanced material, but it saves you from having to deal with an otherwise sloppy education you'd get from random teachers and the holes you may otherwise be left with.

What? As opposed to a couple weeks? The average course on one level of calculus in university takes 3-5 months, a semester. Are people expected to learn it in a few days or something? I'm just telling you the math level asians learn at an early age can be picked up easily and very quickly on your own at a later age and it would make zero difference. There is nothing special about non american nations teaching their kids certain disciplines early but by the time they get to age 18-20 they are on the exact same level as american kids actually pursuing the subject to a level where understanding higher level math matters. The early age kids are not over represented in grad school
