I had a cat that was a huge pussy, he wouldn't defend himself from other cats and would come home completely messed up, but he made a friend with the neighbor's cat, who hung around our yard.
One time, my cat was on the roof opposite to my house and his usual bully was hissing at him. His friend was in our yard.
As soon as he sees our cat in trouble he bolts inmediatedly to the roof and faces my cat's bully until he goes away. They then stare at eachother, and lay down sunbathing.

Cats can love anon, but they're just selective about it.
