I think you can make a reasonable argument that 1972 marked a significant change in the Western world. Nixon went off the Gold standard and essentially ended the Bretton Woods agreement, which had governed international finance since the end of the Second World War. That event can also be seen as the end of the "Golden Age of Capitalism" or whatever you prefer to call the post-War economic boom.
