Goddamnit, why isn't there a history board on 4chan? 7chan has it but that board is pretty much dead.

Anyway, I just read "The Rise and Fall of Communism" by Archie Brown and I thought it was great. I'm currently working on an essay on the totalitarian regimes that emerged during the 20th century, from Adolf Hitler and Stalin to Ioannis Metaxas. I'll be focusing on their ideologies and how they were twisted in order to establish power in their governments.

Do you /lit/fags know of any books dealing with the subject? Any help wil lbe appreciated

Animal Farm.

A history board would make for a great pretense for /n/ 3.0.

Hannah Arendt. The Origins of Totalitiarianism. Especially good on the connection between ideology and totalitarian government - the concluding chapter, "Ideology and Fear", may be useful to you (although the first two sections probably won't be). Also you might consider reading Aron's "Opiate of the Intellectuals." There's other stuff but I can't remember it.

One that looks fun and provocative is Black Mass: Apocalyptic Religion and the Death of Utopia. Not good as a main source, probably, but sounds like it has a fun argument.

Thanks for the recommendations. I failed to mention that I've also read Stephen. J. Lee's: "European Dictatorships, 1918-45". I wasn't impressed to be honest, talking about communism and starting the chapter using descriptions such as "dictatorship" seem a little biased to me. I may be wrong though.

I have read animal farm and 1984 (who hasn't?).

I don't know, military tactics, what-if scenarios and other threads such as these don't "fit in" this board. Although, I'm aware a /hi/ board can become /new/, just as anon said. Pity really.

Have you read Orwell's actual memoir from the spanish civil war, Homage to Catalonia? It was brought up in another thread somewhere.
