Any good books or even charts on american civil war period?

I highly recommend Shelby Footes The Civil War a Narrative. It was rec'd to me on this board and is 3000 pages long, very detailed on every major battle and major effort not to exhibit bias. It was written by a Mississippian military historian 100 years after the war.

I've heard McPhersons The Battle Cry of Freedom is also good and only 1000 pages. I read footes because I wanted to go more in depth and I hear McPherson is more biased towards the union.

After having read footes I don't feel I need to read another all encompassing book but would def grab a biography on some of the important generals like grant, Sherman, Kirby smith and Nathan Bedford Forrest

And what about biased approach?
I am more interesting in ideas behind the war rather than troops movement
Particularly I want to read someone who is pro-union and thinks that CSA should've been allowed to seceed

THE DEMONYM OF UNITEDSTATES IS: «UNITEDSTATIAN», NOT: «AMERICAN».

well your in luck because I just finished Daring and Suffering: A History of the Andrews Railroad Raid by William Pittenger. he mentions a bunch about feeling sorry about the slaves

Foote’s approach is pretty biased, he is interesting because not many popular authors have his sympathies and he’s very popular because of the Civil War series by Ken Burns.
He’s not really a very good historian though.

The Chernow book on Grant has a lot more information than the Ronald C. White book on Grant.
Of all the ones i’ve read it’s Chernow>HW Brands>White

He’s the only I’ve read that paints Jefferson Davis in a positive light. Normally everybody shits on that guy

Foote's narrative is very enjoyable as a story that's probably mostly true, but it isn't a work of history. It doesn't even list sources.
