LOL Card is not a Mormon whereas I am, he also isn't the best writer so I'm not going to defend him.

It's about why this land (i.e. North America) is a land of promise, it connects this land to Christian/Biblical expectations (knowing America is Christian, you know why that in turn fits: national epics sometimes want to connect their lands to their religions/gods), and it even presents ancestral democracy/republicanism and civil freedoms, by which it extends back in time American classical liberalism back to a pre-European beforetimes. On top of that, the book includes in it a utopian time period followed by a later descent into decadence, all as a fable and warning for what might happen to the United States itself if it strays from God or from morality. So it gives the country some moralistic direction and purpose as well. Given these characteristics, I don't see how it's anything but a national epic.

I don't think any of the capitals are accurately placed. Lincoln is further east, and Denver is more center. Springfield is not that far west, etc. etc.
