It’s definitely blasphemous. Saramago tries to humanize Christ as much as possible, starting with his conception. He gives in to flesh cravings, has sex with Mary Madgalene etc. Right at the end there is a very memorable dialogue between God and the Devil. I liked it a lot, but most Christians will either be terribly insulted or roll their eyes nonstop. One thing is certain: Saramago did extensive research, even if the story he tells intentionally deviates from the Bible in some ways.
