Am I the only one who finds the mass accumulation of books to be disgusting? Just looks like shit. Keeping so many books at a time is pathetic. I discard books frequently to prevent becoming a hoarder who places too much value on the book itself instead of the ideas contained therein.

Not him, but I know from personal experience that certain writers keep a lot of books mainly for reference. A lot of the volumes you may see in these pictures are often encyclopedias of some kind, or collected works/poems/letters of an author in multiple volumes; sometimes they are dictionaries, lexicons, etc. A lot of writers needed to have information at hand just like we have the internet at hand.
