Am I the only one who finds the mass accumulation of books to be disgusting? Just looks like shit. Keeping so many books at a time is pathetic. I discard books frequently to prevent becoming a hoarder who places too much value on the book itself instead of the ideas contained therein.

I agree with you, but the aim is not few books for the sake of it; the aim is owning only the books that really matter to you. How many they are eventually, is up to you. There are writers who need to be constantly in contact with 500 books, others will settle with 10.

Emily Dickinson had really few books in her room. Pic is the house of Calogero, Italian poet. Same with Rimbaud, as far as I know. Based Tolstoy had one shelf of books apparently.

I agree with this; I see a large library as an indicator of either indiscriminate taste and therefore dilettantism, or simply a penchant for hoarding unread books. I can't help but be disgusted by either of those options.

No, it doesn't. Staring at an unread book doesn't really communicate anything. Reading it is the only way to find out what you didn't know. You can't know what you don't know; only in retrospect can you see what you didn't know. This is a basic epistemological error only the likes of some fat Arab could make: it is a COPE.

Not him, but I know from personal experience that certain writers keep a lot of books mainly for reference. A lot of the volumes you may see in these pictures are often encyclopedias of some kind, or collected works/poems/letters of an author in multiple volumes; sometimes they are dictionaries, lexicons, etc. A lot of writers needed to have information at hand just like we have the internet at hand.
