We don't really know what any of this stuff is. Maybe in the future we'll have a more holistic understanding of how the supposedly material aspects of the human being relate to the metaphysical. If mind and soul are metaphysical then mental illnesses could be anything from an imbalance at an unseen level to a flaw in the material receiver (the brain) of the immaterial soul. Schizophrenics and psychedelic drug users report all kinds of strange effects and visions, so do dreamers and people in hypnagogic states. Who knows how it all works. We should keep trying to understand and exploring it, but safely, by aiming at the Good.
