Anyone read this? I'm almost done with it and think it was pretty prophetic.

Is the topic "narcissism bad", or is it more hubris related.

Much deeper than that, talks about how the previous waves of neurotic patients of freuds time have transformed into an epidemic of narcissists and how it impacts nearly ever aspect of our lives. He defines the narcissist a little differently than I had as well and find his definition and analysis pretty fitting. Basically our culture is one of total nihilism-the revolutionary fervor of the 60s turned into HR jobs and modeled advertising campaigns. Capitalism consumed it and people no longer see a political future beyond their immediate lives-its a war of all against all. These conditions have made it so many people suffer from pathological narcissism-someone with low self esteem and self worth and thus struggles to draw a line between the outside world and himself. Everything has to be a mirror to himself to confirm their jumbled and confused self image.

Heavy on the freud in parts, but his analysis of the collapse of progressivism and just politics in general due to this wave of narcissism is pretty spot on imo. Even talks about how this pandemic impacts things like sports, the family and media. Its dense and I'm probably not portraying his points exactly but thats the gist of it

Idk if Mark fisher read lasch but capitalist realism screams of it. Shorter more accessible read too.

Lasch is pretty well liked here, that book is maybe a little dated but still holds up pretty well. "The Revolt of the Elites" is another good one if you want to understand murican political shitshow. Also relevant is the "A New Class War" which is a pretty simple but sensible take on things. And like someone already posted, Capitalist Realism.

There was a blog 'The Last Psychiatrist' that continues Lasch line of thinking to more contemporary phenomenon written by a practicing psychiatrist. It was very popular in it's time you'd probably like it

So you think Revolt of the Elites still holds up? I want to recommend it to my book club.

I wouldn't say it's necessarily prophetic as Lasch was more or less describing a process already in motion. But that the trend as he described it only continued does make a strong case for Lasch being more right than wrong.

>>17852065
Yes. It definitely holds up. The somewhat dated cultural references are the only thing that gave away that it was written when I was a child and not a couple of years ago. You should read it and immediately follow it up with "Revolt of the Public" by Martin Gurri.

https://samzdat.com/the-uruk-series/ is a fantastic series of blog posts that covers "Seeing Like a State" James C. Scott, "The Great Transformation" by Karl Polanyi, "The True Believer" by Eric Hoffer, Lasch's "The Culture of Narcissim" and ties them all together. I cannot recommend it enough.

Also, if all of this interests you, then you might like "The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self" by Carl Trueman. It's from an unapologetically Christian perspective (that I don't necessarily share) but the purely descriptive parts are illuminating. I'm on page 393 of 407 and I'm actually kinda shocked he hasn't mentioned "The Culture of Narcissism". Narcissism isn't the focus of the book at all, but the relationship is so painfully obvious.

I really enjoyed reading it too. The Humiliation Essay is gonna stick with me for a long time. Hopefully there's much more to come, the guy could make an actual name for himself by being one of the first to popularize the post-modernism on the American right.

Yea I reread pissearth 2025 many times when it was just on the American sun. That humiliation essay stuck with me as well. I hope he is able to take off and gain some stability and not get his life ruined. His stuff is really the only shit I can tolerate anymore from trs. Check out myth of the 20th century if you haven't already.

Also didn't know how fucking gay high society England was.

I still listen to the other stuff but that's because I can listen to podcasts at work literally everyday. Huge myth fan too. Roots of the Right has some good stuff too if you haven't heard it, few Aussies doing book reports.

I hate how americans overuse and misunderstand narcissism. This author seems to have isolated an idea from Freud's work and elevated it to the level of the gravest threat to western civilization

Awful criticism. As this faggot writes this article, inner urban hellholes of the US continue to produce made-for-prison black, latino, and white poors and the wealthy continue to suburbanize in order to not associate themselves with the poors
