imagine you meet a physicist at a coffee shop to talk about astronomy

tons of things to discuss like quantum mechanics, transition from newtonian physics to einstein theory of relativity, newer developments that challenge that theory, etc. you get the idea

now imagine the look on his face when all you want to talk about is Plato/Aristotle's geocentric model and how the Sun actually revolves around the earth

that is essentially how marxist sound to any real economist

third volume of capital and the manifesto

I encourage you to read an econ textbook or speak with a graduate or phd econ student. Marx is a non-topic. His ideas might have been interesting to think about a hundred years ago. Perhaps there were debates on the ideas of adam smith and marx, and then keynes. But the econ world has long since moved on.

In the context of the astronomy example, why would a modern physicist even talk about plato's geocentric model aside from "it was an interesting idea but ultimately didn't pan out". Even asking them to speak on copernicus sun centered model would be weird as there are newer, more refined models to work with (this would be like discussing adam smith or keynes with a modern economist when there is friedman, fama, etc.). It's not the greatest example to be fair but I am trying to paint you a picture of how a modern economist would approach this topic

I don't get it when rightists call Marxism a religion (it's not) or other things they don't like (science). Don't they like religion first of all? When did religion become something negative for them?

I’m a bachelor on business and economics and I’m not laughing at myself. Yeah I know it’s mostly math and statistics but only a dogmatic person would stick to the numeric part of their studies. I remember going over anthropology and psychology to explain and develop models.
Thinking social and political themes are far from economics and finances is the worst mistake anyone can commit.

you're absolutely right. Just look at how the behavioralists have taken the field of study by storm. To me it is one of the most interesting fields of economics right now.

I don't mean to come across as one of those cope econ guys who try way too hard to make it a hard science. Nor am I discounting the role of psychology and anthropology in helping to develop more comprehensive economic models.

I have never met a marxist or seen a thread on this board about marx that had anything meaningful to say about economics. Without knowing the history of econ as a field of study, they are stuck debating and critiquing ideas that have been proven false (i use the term lightly) or inaccurate for decades.

I havent read it for a few years and I think that theres an Ezra vogel book thats more recommended, the chapters on his early life in the Pantsov book are interesting but the bulk of the rest focuses on mao doing stuff while deng is constantly getting cucked by him and just taking it. I dont really think this book did enough to develop an image of his character and as a historical narrative didnt focus enough on what distinguished him politically. for the most part it is just a chronicle of his life, you wont learn much about his economic thought with this one
