>This new image for CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY looks at the children at the centre of the story, and highlights the way Roald Dahl’s writing manages to embrace both the light and the dark aspects of life, ready for Charlie’s debut amongst the adult titles in the Penguin Modern Classics series.

>A spokeswoman for Penguin stressed that the new edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was "intended for an adult audience", adding that the cover image was not intended to represent either of female children featured in the story.

>The image is taken from a French magazine shoot by the photographers Sofia Sanchez and Mauro Mongiello, for a 2008 fashion article entitled Mommie Dearest.

>"We wanted something that spoke about the other qualities in the book," Penguin Press's Helen Conford told the Bookseller. "It's a children's story that also steps outside children's and people aren't used to seeing Dahl in that way."

A direct translation would be 'the stone of the wise', a philosopher being a lover a wisdom so it is close to the latin. It's a well known phrase in the German language although I'm not really sure why. Everyone knew it before Harry Potter was written. I think the popular connception of it is something like 'that which gives all answers'.

>stone of the wise
I've always felt the stone of knowledge was a better direct translation.
While der Weise is a wise man and die Weisen are the wise men, Weisen and Wissen have the same roots. Wissen is to know or knowledge. Wissenshaft is science and Ich weiß is I know. I'm wrong since the Salmon of Knowledge from celtic mythology is der Lachs des Wissens, but it's interesting that two mythology objects became der Stein der Weisen and der Lachs des Wissens.

Thats because it is not a translation. "Stein der Weisen" is the correct alchemical term in the german alchemical schools.

Also the root of alchemy in europe lies within germany, so maybe "philosophers stone" is the translation.

A pretty good one actually, considering the shift of the meaning of the word "philosopher" in the last 500 years.
