I would say they're sports but there's pretty good literature about sailing and mountaineering. I imagine the memoirs of 60s and 70s Formula 1 racers are interesting too.

cinderella man got made into a movie, that doesn't mean it's "great" but probably above average at least, desu the only writing about boxing i remember are some essay on muhammad ali that was in soul on ice, and that other essay on boxing vs. wrestling in mythologies by barthes

There's also The Hustler (or whatever the book it was based off of was called). Not sure if pool sharking is considered a sport though. I think there's also The Golden Arm by Nelson Algren. I think it's a cards based novel about drug addiction. Then there's also the baccarat section in Casino Royale. That was pretty based. In fact every time baccarat comes up in a Bond novel, it gets really based.

This Sporting Life by David Storey
Great novel from the "British Kitchen Sink" movement in the late 50's and 60's.
All about Rugby League, Masculinity, the desire to get out of the working class and themes like that.
Well worth a read.

I read it when I wasn’t very /lit/, but in distance running/track & field circles, it gets passed around and talked about a lot. I thought it was great.

All team sports are pretty much the same, the problem you'll most likely encounter will be getting enough people together at specified time, since work and other responsibilities take priority.
Maybe try some 1v1 sport for a start.

Tim Krabbe, The Rider.

I read "The Hustler", "Color of Money" and "Queens Gambit" and they were are pretty pleasant.
I think sports are interesting enough on their own that they don't really need to be made into fiction. And they're rather limited in terms of what you can tell in the story, what the characters go through.
My favorite sports book is probably "The four kings" by George Kimball, describing the history of Leonard/Hagler/Duran/Hearns rivalries and the antics outside of the ring. Lots of interesting information about their characters, habits, training, injuries etc., they were all fascinating guys on their own so it's interesting read and Kimball has very entertaining writing style.
