>Beware! Evil tricks threaten us:
>if the German people and kingdom should one day decay,
>under a false, foreign rule
>soon no prince would understand his people;
>and foreign mists with foreign vanities
>they would plant in our German land;
>what is German and true none would know,
>if it did not live in the honour of German Masters.
>Therefore I say to you:
>honour your German Masters,
>then you will conjure up good spirits!
>And if you favour their endeavours,
>even if the Holy Roman Empire
>should dissolve in mist,
>for us there would yet remain
>holy German Art!

1. obviously pol bait
2. Wagner was born 1813 -- that translation is incredibly shit.
3. Why did you structure the greentext like this, you butchered the semicolons
4. Wieso ist dir die Art des Deutschen von Deutschland überhaupt wichtig, wenn du nicht mal Deutscher bist?

5. It is sad that Germany is no longer what it was, we live in the modern world and this change is as much Germany's fault as it is the fault of modern society, history and American culture being so dominant. All countries experience this, this issue is not solely a German issue. There may be a possibility for change but it is neither likely nor are the German people willing to change. I would say this is all still after effect of the second world war which killed so many good people and destroyed cultural and social structures, which produced the art we value here, but that would be inaccurate and the decline of the west is not just the fault of history.

Wagner was actually a very skilled poet, but a mix between suiting it for Gesamtkunstwerk-- an arduous effort, and the difficulty of translation (where you find poor quality translations online like the Op's) has led to a contemporary decline in his reputation. During the 19th and early 20th century he was very much respected as a poet, by the likes of Baudelaire and Eliot.

>He is the history of the most inward life of the German Spirit during the horrible century of the complete extinction of the German people. Look at his head, hiding under the insane french full-bottomed wig, this master - as a miserable cantor and organist struggling between small Thuringian villages, which are hardly known by name, with meager pay, so unnoticed that it took a whole century again to pull his works from oblivion; Even finding in the music an artificial form, which was externally the whole image of its era, dry, stiff, pedantic, like wig and plait in notes: and now watch what a world the incomprehensibly large Sebastian built from these elements!
>While this happened with the big Bach (pun: "bach = stream"), the great and small courts of the German princes were swarmed by Italian opera composers and virtuosos, which were bought with monstrous sacrifices, to give the scorned Germany the scraps of an art, which nobody even bothers to give the least attention today. - But Bach's spirit, the German spirit, came out of the mystery of the most wonderful music, his site of rebirth.
