also, its not exactly a high iq position and most people think about it in passing. same could be said of the gist of most philosophies. most people stumble on conclusions parrelel to philosophers, like epicurianism (something that a lot of people implicitly do) or idealism or materialism. philosophers just state it in a more critical systematic way. the difference between a writer and a professional writer, a person doing taxes and a proffesional accountant. someone who kind of learned about fish through fishing and a marine biologist.

its the degree of specialized knowledge. most people know a little about a lot of things, and a specialized person just goes in detail about a specific thing.

Can anyone who really understands Stirner explain to me why his philosophy is supposed to be incompatible with political ideology? He explains early on that the appearance of national leaders caring for their people are truly egoists by limiting their care to 'their' people, their aims, their will. So, if it's my will to have the society I happen to live in operate according to a particular ideology's systems because of my personal preferences, rather than any sort of moral reasons, where does that leave me? For instance, if I support communism because I just think it will give me a free stuff, and would switch sides if I saw a greater opportunity for free stuff but have yet to, am I an "anarcho-egoist" or a communist?

It is not about the cliff notes version of his ideas but how he has written about them and in what context. The 19th century was a very interesting time and The Ego and its Own is a very well written, clever, and self-contained book. He is in some sense the precursor to Nietzsche. A lot of Nietzsche's thoughts are "obvious" to you or others but they have rarely been formulated and laid out as lucidly.
