I live in Russia (1000 km from Moscow), I purchased this book from a local bookstore. Is this book a good one? I have not read books in English before.

I have Christian libertarian views, but I have no problem reading authors with radically opposing views (unless it's sophistry like gender studies). Moreover, I am familiar with Soviet aesthetics (through cinema and fiction), romanticizing the struggle of workers for their rights, and this seems to me to be a narrative that has determined a lot in the modern world, so this needs to be studied.

So they key points of difference from Soviet fantasism are:
1) Collective action by workers themselves.
2) Limited capacity for collective action
3) Common law hankering after parliamentarianism.

Zinn isn't as important as the workerist tradition in general is, but many western traditions tend workerist rather than leninist when they exit left from parliamentary politics. Italy for example.

People’s history is awesome if you know the traditional American historical narrative, as the book doesn’t actually provide a structured history but instead offers counter examples and specifics of broad and sweeping segments of a transitional US history class/book.

doesnt that make it inherently a a anti-thesis position though? if it goes out of its way to critique a specific narritive? rather than trying to piece together multiple narrives and understandings?

also, ive always had a distast for things named “a people’s x”. having the gaul to say you are speaking for a people rather than simply saying this is your understanding of a topic as through lense x y and z

It’s worth reading to understand the leftist view of American history and its relation to our current society and identity. The issues I have with it have more to with its underlying moral position, but reading things like this is necessary for me to articulate my positions.

For anyone that doesn't have this book - just read the first half of the first chapter, about the interactions between Columbus and the natives of the Americas. He presents a side of history that I was never once exposed to in my (American) school education.

It only takes a few minutes to read, and if it doesn't impress upon you the nearly boundless potentials of human cruelty and the necessity of history as a means of reminding future generations what they must never revert to, I don't know what else would.

https://libcom.org/files/A%20People's%20History%20of%20the%20Unite%20-%20Howard%20Zinn.pdf

Is it the best written history of all time? Will it give you all the essentials? No. But it will give you a different perspective to hold alongside the others you already have. The first-hand accounts in this book are almost ridiculous at points, in that it is so difficult to believe another human being could have held such thoughts and then proudly put them down to paper.

it's just a stock phrase but the book is titled 'A' rather than the usual 'THE' like 'The People's Republic of ___', 'The People's Army', etc. so it's not suggesting it's definitive.
