How am I supposed to know if it's a novel if they don't splay it across the cover?

I personally hate when a short story collection is titles "TITLE OF SHORT STORY and other stories".
Just come up with some title for the collection, Jesus Christ.

>> No.17802882

>>17802873
I wonder if anyone's done that but not have the title 'story' in the collection.

Some of Agatha Christie's collections suffer from that. There was one with a hound in the title, only they put the story further down, so I had a bit of a laugh at myself because I kept wondering when will I finally read about that dog.

That would have to be some serious error in printing. Not that it can't happen, but I imagine any example would end up first in trash and then as rare collection item.
Penguin Classics edition of Arsene Lupin, Gentleman Thief doesn't have Seven of Hearts, Queen's Necklace and Madame Imbert's Safe, but the collection has its own title anyway. They instead added some stories from other collections.

Have to correct myself, it has Queen's Necklace, but not Black Pearl.

>> No.17802979

I don't know, Black Pearl is a rather weak story, but the other two are interesting part of Lupin lore, how he "met" Leblanc and the story of how young Lupin got duped by better swindlers. Guess they wanted to cover more than one collection, but didn't have the budget for actually publishing all three.

Carver did that for all four collections and didn't even bother with the "and other stories" bit. Just "Will You Please Be Quiet, Please", etc ("WYPBQP" is a great title, though.) I think it works if the one story is clearly central in the collection. Otherwise it's a bit lame. "For Esmé With Love And Squalor" doesn't quite work, for that reason. (I think that story is the best in the book but it's not really predominant.) IIRC the collection was originally published under the title "Nine Stories".

The best short story collection title I can think of that's not a story title is "Tales of the Unexpected".

I think you might be confusing Carter with Salinger.

I thought Wolfe's The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories and Other Stories was a fun title for a short story collection.

>> No.17803215

>>17802882
Sometimes the title story is actually a novella, that's about as close as I've seen
