I think Die fröhliche Wissenschaft should be translated as “The Cheerful Knowledge” rather than “The Gay Science” or “The Joyous Wisdom”

"Die fröhliche Wissenschaft" is a German translation of the original English term "The Gay Science", which existence preceded the book's existence by decades. This is why Carlyle referred to economics as "The Dismal Science", as a direct pun against "The Gay Science", which, again, was in common usage.

Nietzsche literally meant "The Gay Science" no matter what other translation you feel has a better ring to it.
