While I love Wilhelm Meister and Faust is also a masterpiece, I would suggest maybe try beginning with something rather short. He wrote a fairy tale which I think demonstrates his power in a really short amount of time, it’s called the green serpent and beautiful lily. It’s absolutely gold tier. If you do pick Wilhelm Meister, I preferred the Thomas Carlyle translation.
