My all-time favorite historical novels are Reimer and Het Heksenhuis by Jacqueline Zirkzee. Though I don't think they've been translated into English yet.

I keep seeing these posted. Looked it up. Character is based off another work and Flashman is a rugby player who bullies the main character from another novel then gets expelled. The Flashman novels are about his life after being expelled.

The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson. Three novels that take place during the 17th century and follow three (mostly two) characters who travel about Europe meeting famous historical figures like Isaac Newton, Leibniz, and etc. Mostly it's about the beginnings of our modern day monetary system, but it hides it beneath pirates, vagabonds, and aristocratic intrigue.
