I'm a longtime amateur novelist and trying to craft more character-centered stories. Trying to figure out the answer to this question for a while. What makes a character stick to readers' minds even after the book?

Realism; make 'em true to life—observe the people you meet. That's number one. Number two, they must be rounded. Have 'em play different roles; show their hopes and dreams, their strengths and weaknesses, their successes and failures. Number three: give 'em an interesting name, dammit!!
