How does /lit/ feel about these online rationality blogospheres like what you see with the likes of Eliezer Yudkowsky's LessWrong, Scott Alexander's SlateStar, or that MoldBug guy's Unqualified Reservation?

Initially, there is a 'red pill' type appeal to them which makes them somewhat addictive. I think the framework they provide to interpret the world is pretty good and useful. But by the same token, something feels wrong about it. It's particularly cringe to see their positions on Bitcoin back in 2013. It makes me realize these people are just as clueless as anyone else

I have never witnessed anything as cringe as Yudkowski's writing.
I still enjoyed it

His invention of Rokos Basilisk was hilarious and still makes Nerdtards shiver with fear.
>Moldbug anyway still makes woketards seethe even though he too is suspicous because half jew.
>Scott Alexander
Is a leftie liberal but can't help but stumble into race realism sometimes only to quickly withdraw everything he just said.

I appreciate their relative honesty in the current intellectual landscape, Moldbug especially. They are all clearly smart and inventive with the concepts they come up with, most interesting stuff from each are probably Yudkowsky's thought experiments about AI, Alexander's armchair sociology(toxoplasma, ingroup, etc), and Moldbug's 'cathedral'.

The main value I see with these guys is that they start discussions about stuff by identifying key concepts and presenting them in attention-catching ways, and they're fairly openminded about what sorts of ideas they'll entertain.

Pretty sure that was invented by Roko, not Yudkowsky. The latter actually banned it from being discussed on the site due to nerd anxiety meltdowns. I think Roko is still around and posts on twitter.

It's cringe if your entire worldview is rationalist blogs. But Scott is one of the best contemporary political and cultural writers and if you're not reading him you're missing out.

Any person or organization that goes out of its way to claim its being very "rational" is usually not and is just desperately trying to legitimize itself. In these cases usually its because the "blogospheres" actually have an extreme ideological bent but they want to put the stamp of legitimacy on all their conclusions by saying "we're just being rational bro".
Its the default assumption that all people are attempting to be rational? Its kind of like repeatedly saying you're a good person. My instinct is to tend to think you're not one and you're trying to hide something or compensate for something.
Insisting you're "just trying to be rational" is a great Jewish rhetorical tool in an argument though because what you're really doing is saying "you're not being rational." Easy way to get under someone's skin. "Oh, in contrast to you, I'm just trying to be rational about this. Idk wtf you're doing. Its definitely not being rational though."

I look at LessWrong sometimes to see if there's anything worthwhile. More often than not I get turned off by the writing style (most of them write the same turdy way). I agree that something feels wrong about the posts there, in general. Some reflection posts feel unnatural/just done for the post. Some tech posts feel... fraudulent?

I still visit because I've gotten a few new ways of thinking about things.

If you read some fiction by Yidkovsky, you will immediately notice that he writes like an edgy junior high student. His characters are shallow, transparent self-inserts that pwn their friends with facts and logic. Clearly a power fantasy and a retelling of some shameful memories in a way Yudcucksky wishes they have happened.

It could be literally anything since being rational is a virtuous quality in today's view. Again, usually when a blog or commentator today uses it though they're using it to shield themselves from the expected criticism that they're ideologically possessed and actually not very rational at all.
