I haven't tried it yet but Always On Guard by Jay Cantrell is supposedly a fantasy romance worth reading. The MC (Able/Art) may or may not have ever actually been born in our world. I only read the books once but I interpreted it mostly as occurring within the imagination of his mother. There are a few different ways you could take the appearances of the real world and the drowning & water-healing motifs. Some people take an interpretation where he and his brother were twins in the womb, but his brother absorbed his fetus there before birth. Able's descent into Mythgarthr may also be a bit of misremembering, though - he may have literally drowned as a boy in the woods, his body never found. Or it might have been that he was never baptized before his death and that this is what his mother imagines his soul going through to find its way to heaven. Anyways Wolfe gave an interview where he said that he was basically just following the example of Alice in Wonderland, where you need to go from the familiar to the unfamiliar, but of course Wolfe in interviews is always very guarded and gives the least relevant bit of truth. So I'm just about finished this and I'm noticing a few major discrepancies with the main series.

1. Gardens of the Moon starts in the 96th year of Emperor Kellenved's reign
2. Kellenved's Reach reveals that technically as the first emperor of a new dynasty the years are counted from his birth year. Kellenved lies and says he is 70 years old.
3. Therefore Gardens of the Moon takes place 26 years after the founding of the Malazan Empire.
4. This of course fucks up the established timeline BADLY because there are multiple characters who were very old are now only in their 40s and 50s. (example: One of the Crimson Guard mentions that he has a granddaughter who is a full adult.)
5. There is a line in House of Chains where Nok explains that living in the Deadhouse granted them all extended lifespans.
6. Toc the Elder doesn't even appear in this prequel series despite the main series saying that he was among the very first people to join Kellenved.

If it weren't for Vance, Wolfe probably wouldn't have written scifi and would have just kept writing contemporary stories like Peace. Peace is Wolfe's best novel, so fuck Vance. That said, Vance is pretty alright. I'd recommend reading Wolfe first just because his work is better and more reread-worthy - you can read it, read some Vance, then come back and read it again - but Vance is one of the few SF authors who were ever near Wolfe's level, so you can't go wrong either way.

Here's my take on Mercerism

The majority of people in the world of DADES find worth in a simulacrum. Coined by Jean Buadrilliard, simulacrums are realities that are conjured to fill the emptiness in people’s lives. Living on a bleak, abandoned earth forces many to resort to this escapism. The character of John Isidore exemplifies this process. Living in an empty apartment complex, John is horribly lonely. To ail his empty heart, John utilizes this universe’s religion: Mercerism. The success of this religion in creating a simulacrum coincides with Baudrilliard’s phases: “it is the reflection of a profound reality; it masks and denatures a profound reality; it masks the absence of a profound reality; it has no relation to any reality whatsoever; it is its own pure simulacrum.”. Like a theatrical performance, a simulacrum is a planned event that provides a sense of order and direction. They—and he—cared about one thing; this fusion of their mentalities oriented their attention the hill, the climb, the need to ascend”. Isidore escapes from his apartment and enters a false reality. Group efforts provide a sense of higher importance. Mercersim does this perfectly. This illusory experience removes its users from their bleak, dust filled world and offers a unified journey with others collaboratively ascending a hill. This offers them escape from their personal despairs and gives them a sense of belonging and purpose. By participating in an engaging simulacrum, people are able to escape empty lives and fill themselves with hope and longevity.

The Deck of Dragons is similar to a Tarot Deck. It gives readers of the deck a glimpse into who the major players are in any given event.
Elder Race is any race that is no longer actively involved in the world. The main 4 elder races where T'Lann Imass, Jaghut, Forkrul Assail and K'Chain Che'Malle. Most of these elder races have been dead for hundreds of thousands of years.
Warrens are intentionally left mysterious. They are the source of magical powers. Erikson doesn't like Hard Magic systems like Sanderson or D&D. Magic is uncommon but you can find very minor practioners in most cities. Real mages like Tattersail are rare and individuals like Anomander Rake are Unique.
The very simplest way to explain Warrens is like its a separate dimension. A user of the Warren of Tellas (Fire) could summon fire from this dimension to blast somebody. This is a very oversimplified way of explaining it.

An Ascendent is not a God. They are an entity who is heavily influencing things and people. Not all Ascendents are Gods, but all Gods were once Ascendents. Some Ascendents are more powerful then Gods. Its all very complex.

Book 2 & 3 are incredible.
