17714213 No.17714213 [Reply] [Original]

Serious thread for a moment.
I wrote pic related in 2019, it got shortlisted for an award in 2020.
I've got another collection of stories coming out this year.
Now i'd love to write some brilliant epic novel but the short story thing seems to be working out for me at least in a small, modest way.
So i'm thinking what if i direct all my mental energy and effort into just being the best short story writer i can possibly be? Like totally dedicating myself to the craft and fine tuning my skills over years until i produce a body of work that really holds up well.
So to that end i'm thinking i need to read more and better short story writers.
I've read quite a bit so far and absorbed influences as well as i can. In this first collection i was aiming to sound a little like W. Somerset Maugham and Henry Lawson. I've recently been reading Raymond Carver and Chekhov.
What other masters do i need to read if i want to get better at my craft? Preferably writers that aren't as well known as the obvious masters. I don't want to end up sounding like every other hipster wannabe.

>white author
Aren't you ashamed of yourself? Only so many books and stories can be published and you are in effect silencing the voices of disenfranchised people of color, queer people, and differently abled people. They have stories to tell too but white people won't give them their turn. What you should do is talk to your publisher and sponsor one of the many available and underrepresented authors out there in your place if you're a good person.

>> No.17715407

Actually it's the opposite
Here in Australia almost the entire publishing industry is woke and the best way to get published and win awards is to check off as many boxes on the diversity checklist as possible.
I was told bluntly by publishers and reviewers in Melbourne that they weren't interested in what a straight white guy like me has to say.
I'm lucky to have gotten as far as i have and it's very hard to get further.

I forgot the idiotic and toxic nature of this board, my mistake.
I will go back to DFW posting and bitching about Harry Potter right away. My apologies for taking this board seriously.

So write under an ethnic-sounding pseudonym. It's probably the easiest field imaginable to do so.

Yeah the thought did cross my mind, either that or pretending to be Aboriginal which i'm convinced a lot fo writers in this country are doing.
But, and forgive me if this sounds pretentious, if i can't succeed on my own merits as myself then success is meaningless to me.
Call me old fashioned and hopelessly romantic for thinking like that but i can't help it.

What you should have done is asked your question without "doxxing yourself" (I use quotes because you might not be this short story author at all) or posted a selfie; if you'd done the latter more people would've come forward to offer advice who would've otherwise gone with the more likely assumption that you are pretending to be this guy for no particular reason.

This is more modern also. Personally, I suggest philosophy as a means to enrich your stories. Getting outlandish and tapping into the discontent of modern society with philosophers like Deleuze, Derrida, or Ellul could really help you write from some interesting perspectives.

I think you really just mean to say that if you can't get personal credit you don't want to do it. To me, this appears to be more important to you than your desire to "just being the best short story writer i can possibly be." If you truly cared about your art, you'd want it to get out there by hook or crook. It's clear that the publishers aren't judging the works on their merits, so that bit of your argument can be dismissed out of hand.

See this right here is how fucked up this board is.
People are assuming i'm not the author of this book because they assume everyone on this board is mentally ill and trolling the shit out of everyone else for reasons that only make sense to the mentally ill people in question.
Perhaps we all need to cut 4chan out of our lives for good?
It can't be healthy for us.

Lewis Woolston hates niggers. I met Lewis Woolston at a book signing event, I am a black man, Lewis Woolston called me a nigger. Lewis Woolston pending allegations of racial bigotry. Racial supremacy Lewis Woolston. Lewis Woolston called me a nigger and told me to go pick cotton. Lewis Woolston drugged my drink at the book signing event and called me a nigger. I woke up in Lewis Woolston's cotton field and he told me to work faster or I'd be "one red nigger." I aksed him what Lewis Woolston meant by that and he said "I am Lewis Woolston and I hate niggers and faggots."

Chekhov and Maupassant are the two greatest imo, they both wrote a ton of short stories that cover a wide range of timeless issues.

I also would recommend Isaac Babel. He is very good. He's more obscure than Chekhov, although not super unknown.
