You don't translate when you speak the language properly. I feel like it's always the same person making those posts. Just learn a damn language and get over your inferiority complex.

but this is how almost everyone learns Latin/Greek, because nobody ever actually learns them as real languages, just as tools for reading. I guarantee most people on this board claiming to read Latin/Greek are translating in their head as they read.

I think it differentiates from person to person. I know four languages, but I always 'think' in English. For another example, I had a German friend in college who spoke both languages fluently, but English was her second language and she always 'thought' in German. My grandparents don't seem to have this issue though, they just think in whatever language they are currently situated in.

People who can actually read Virgil don't do that. That's very beginner

That's way you should use LLPSI and not Wheelock or some other grammar-translation shit. And listen a lot. Learning Latin as a living language is 100% doable with the internet.

>People who can actually read Virgil don't do that
but they do, even if they don't view it as translating, English (or their native language's) words for the words they read are popping into their head as they read. The only way you can avoid this is by either A) achieving a level of fluency in the language not possible without being immersed in a Latin/Greek-speaking environment, or B) learn entirely through something like LLPSI, which also not many people do relative to other methods.
>>17702975
that's entirely irrelevant, ancient Greek is a different language. Please stop trying to make yourself relevant
>>17702976
>Is it so hard to believe?
Yes, I don't believe that there is a distinction in how you handle easy versus hard passages except with regards to your awareness of the translation.
>>17702989
yep, this is the only way to do it, but I don't think most people here actually take the time to immerse themselves

>yep, this is the only way to do it, but I don't think most people here actually take the time to immerse themselves

Yep. It's quite shocking to me how little attention and recognition Latin podcasts receive, considering they're truly the only way to get fluent.

I do know ancient greek tho, I learned them in high school, it's mandatory. Still it would be stupid to read in ancient greek since the meaning is similar and the difficulty higher.

the same can be said of all translations. Reading in modern greek is no less of a translation than english.
>>17703141
my point is, you never move beyond that level if you're just reading. you have to speak and hear a language to develop those direct connections

I like to believe that I can speak english at a pretty much native level and yet I still prefer to read English literature translated, because my mother tongue speaks more directly to me, and no matter how good my English gets, my mother tongue will always be closer to me.
I am pretty sure my english is better than the second language of most anglo bilinguals, and the people complaining about translations are just posing or trying to flex their language skills.

I do watch foreign films and anime with english subtitles though, if that means anything.

To post nonsense that you don't even believe.

I bet you're a native English speaker and only speak English (poorly).

You're simply self-loathing brit based as evidenced by your disdain for English.
