How the hell did modern novel writing quality drop so bad? I’m re-reading a fanfiction that I found saved in my favorites from like 2011. Unfortunately, it’s writing is better than any of the “new releases” I checked out from the library this year. Is there any saving modern literature? Will there ever be another Nabokov are are we doomed to YA for the rest of eternity?

Time turns the sweetness of youth to ash in your mouth.

Beyond nostalgia, the mass market nature of all media means there is no highbrow or lowbrow anymore, everything must be for all audiences, and suffers for it.

Pretty sure they have sex to D. H. Lawrence in a later chapter somewhere.

Both the highbrow and the lowbow have becomes muddied and unappealing. There is nothing wrong with universalist works, but the loss of the niche literature saddens me beyond words.

Wrong. There are good ages and bad ages for art. We are in a period of stagnation and decadence, art (and morals) have been in the process of degrading.

There's no more art to be done, everything has already been done. There's never going to be good art again.

I’m actually reading it right now it’s definitely got the makings of a modern classic. Funnily enough it’s very Nabokovian.

It is unlikely there will ever again be a human population that is (a) sufficiently educated (b) lacking technological cognitive impairment (c) large enough to sustain a group of exceptional individuals, to produce works of older caliber.

Maybe posthumans will work it out.

Anyway, if you'd be interested in reading a rough draft of the first three chapters of the second book in that series I'll be writing (set to release around the 20 - 25th this month hopefully) here's a link for that:
