It's nonsense. I'm reading literal nonsense right now.

Try turning the book upside down, you may of been holding it in the wrong orientation

This book would have been discounted long ago if it didn't take Joyce 11 years to write. They think because he took such time and care in it that it simply must have merit.

It actually saddens me to see people dismiss Finnegans Wake out of hand. It might be the best novel I've ever read, and it's so immensely rewarding I can't even begin to describe how much I got out of it. It's like food for the soul, and it's so grand and uplifting that the only word I can use is religious or at least mythical. If any anon wants the actual plot explained, I'd be happy to help explain the broad strokes, though I haven't read it in a few months so I might be foggy on the details. My general recommendation is to read Campbell's and Robinson's Skeleton Key, as it really clarifies many plot events and characters. The more you read of Finnegans Wake the more you understand, and the more you understand the more you want to read. I love this book so much and I want other anons to recognize its greatness too. Yes its confusing, its imposing, but stick with it and with the Skeleton Key, and you'll be so immensely rewarded that all other books will seem insignificant.

Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker is married to Anna Livia Plurabelle, and togther they have two sons Shaun and Shem, and a daughter Issy. When the titular Finnegan the hod-carrier falls off a ladder and dies, HCE comes in to Dublin on a boat from the east. He encounters two young girls in the park and some kind of sexual incident occurs, which is never pinned down in definite terms. Three soldiers witness the sexual incident between HCE and the two girls and the rumor of HCE's sin spreads throughout Dublin, throughout Ireland, throughout the world, and throughout time itself, past and future. HCE is put on trial and found guilty. He dies and is buried underground before lightning strikes, and his voice is heard throughout the hills of Ireland like thunder, and this makes people nervous, so they dig up his buried casket and HCE is not in it, its empty. A hen scratches at a pile of refuse, where a moldy, ink-running, sopping-wet and rotting letter written by ALP is found which defends her husband's honor throughout human history. In Book II Shem, who is an autistic neet scholar that is more or less a stand-in for Joyce himself, deciphers the letter and Shem's life and reputation are detailed. There are many chapters detailing a kind of rivalry between two characters representing Shem and Shaun, though they take on different names and forms: The Mookse and the Gripes, Mutt and Jute, Butt and Taff, Mick and Nick, Glugg and Chuff, etc. Each of these brother-battles is used thematically to explore larger themes, like the mookse and the gripes representing native Celts vs their subjugators, Anglos. The children (now called Dolph and Kev) study for school while notes are being taken in the margins. HCE comes back and keeps a tavern while the radio plays a comedy dialogue from Butt and Taff of how Buckley shot the Russian general, meanwhile the taverngoers get drunker and drunker and confuse HCE with the antagonist of their stories of a man who disgraced a young woman in Dublin and evaded his debts, and who flaunted this in everyone's face. The night at the tavern ends and everyone goes to bed. Shaun writes love letters to Issy and lays out his reasons for punishing and fighting Shem throughout the whole book. The dreamer is on the verge of waking up, the pieces of HCE's shattered life and reputation are slowly put together again, and everyone and everything is brought to where it was at the start of the book.

Like I said those are very very broad strokes but that's the gist

Apparently there's a first draft version of the book that's easier to comprehend. You might find good info in it.
