are there any books that come to mind for you as being "must reads" for people before they turn 18?

e.g., tcitr/ the stranger

no, just read books, critically, and various sorts
also, reported for underage - hopefully getting banned will help you focus on reading instead of asking stupid questions in a stupid place like this

The best piece of advice I can give you is to stop asking so many questions like this. The board is plagued with people asking questions that they could answer themselves by doing the work.

Read a lot of books, you'll find out yourself which were good to read. No one has a magic answer.

this. Just fucking read what you want and then you will stumble upon books. There is no "MUST READ BEFORE 18" books because people are different. The book I would have wanted to read before 18 might not be the book you need.

Only retarded ideologues come up with "must read" books. That way they can pretend they have some power and maintain an illusion of predictability.

The Bible
Mythology by Edith Hamilton
The Illiad by Homer
The Odyssey by Homer
The Republic by Plato
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (or at least Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth)

A lot of people just recommend varius 20th and 19th century classics and those are good but if your goal is to provide the young person with a decent foundation for further literary exploration, I don't think they will be as helpful as these. These books help you to understand the references you will encounter in many if not most of the books you read. I'd also personally recommend Industrial Society and Its Future by Uncle Ted but that's really not a must read.

The only 'must reads' before you turn 18 are the ones that lose relatability as you age. As an example, 'Catcher in the Rye' is best enjoyed when you're around that same period of your life. As you get older, the protagonist just comes off as irritating.

No, not really. Maybe some childrens books or whatever your parents see as appropriate for you. I don't think humans should take up serious intellectuality until they're already seasoned adults. We need to step away from this cultish love of reading for its own sake, only caring of the quantity read, not of the substance. While I don't agree with there being any "must read" books for the youth, I will say that Plato and Aristotle are essential to sharpening a developing mind; and that authors such as Hermann Hesse can be a valuable experience to young adults who feel frustrated and confused by the world.

This is quite good, though I don't know that you need all of "The Republic" and think that you could get by with just the section on the cave (obviously it would be worthwhile to read the whole thing, but it's not as essential as that one metaphor). I would probably add Leer and Merchant of Venice to Shakespeare. And some general history.
