Kindle fire is cheap af and works fine. You can get (almost) any book you want for free, what's not to love. Yes I'm broke, this post is for other brokes. If you're a rich mfer get one of the more expensive ones like Oasis or Paperwhite idk. I own a Paperwhite and a Fire and use both often (can't read PDFs on Paperwhite). The Paperwhite is only a marginally better experience.

Kindle Paperwhite is good. My only criticisms are that PDFs are very difficult to read and that you must convert epubs to mobis then send them to the Kindle. It can be a pain to turn on your computer and convert your epubs from libgen to mobis using calibre. However, if you have an android phone you can get Calibre running on your phone using Termux. (You can use the command line or, if you know how to use a VNC, you can get the GUI interface.)

Kobo has lots of autistic software gimmicks that wowed me at first, but then I thought about when I would actually care about a dozen different reading stats and realized the answer is "never", it's pure autism.
I liked the Kindle reader software more, but I don't remember why, and it was more stable over all. The Kobo's orange light is cool, but I think its white light was not as pleasant as the Paperwhite's.
Both have mutually exclusive ecosystems, so it depends on where you want to buy your ebooks. You can pirate on both of them and epub/mobi convert well enough for me to say I wouldn't base a reader choice on that.

Orange light is nice, but white light is perfectly serviceable. I returned the Kobo, so I can't comment on how it would feel long term, only that I don't have issues reading on my softer white Kindle device.

Keep in mind that you adjust the lighting according to the environment too. In complete darkness my Voyage is set to 4 (0 is virtually invisible even in complete darkness), on a bright summer day I turn it up to max (24). The light isn't just for lighting, it also increases the contrast between the text and the background, so you will always have it on.

There's also differences between individual devices, so maybe not all Kobo have a harsh blue tint like mine had. Amazon is famous for their nonexistent quality control for Kindle screens and uneven lighting and spots have always been a thing. On the other hand they switch out your device for a new one no questions asked. It's still annoying, especially if you buy a more expensive one. You will get a proper one, just not necessarily with your first order.

Entirely disagree. It may be a large relative price leap, but the thing is still cheap. It costs about half of what you’d expect to pay for an iPad. I don’t think that’s a problem. The large screen size and warm light are features that I don’t mind paying for.

not really huge advantages since you can install anything on any android version because you can just enable developer mode and install any application that way. that being said many out of the box android versions for e-readers are limited in capacity and other things to encourage people to buy new readers later down the line and other some such. for the average use that only wants to read books it wont really make a difference. most people really just install a different e-reader app that the one that comes built in or unlock the ability to have it read any ebook files rather than just the ones purchased through the preinstalled stores.

I have a voyage I bought for 105,- 4 years ago second hand. Honestly the Oasis offers barely anything better then it. They have the same PPI as far as I know.

>>17631842
Kindle owners can't read that well, hence you see second hand ones all the time, but hardly any Kobos. I compared both the paperwhite and the Clara HD and, based on the materials, features and processing power , I went for the Clara HD because it's the best bank for the buck, you're able to bypass registration, upgrade storage and install koreader (the latest version of the paperwhite can't be cracked yet), which let's me read tons of formats and extend battery life by setting ink refresh by chapter instead of 6 pages. It doesn't really matter if it's cheap plastic because I was going to put it on a book looking cover anyway.

The Max Lumi is $800 but that's because it's 13.3".
You can get 10.3" like the Note Air, Supernote A5X or reMarkable 2 for around $500.
On a budget you can get 7.8" note taking like the Nova or Supernote A6X for $350.
There are options below that like the Likebook Ares or Mobiscribe but they won't provide as great of an experience.
Most of them will also work with Bluetooth keyboards. You could also do that on something like the Poke 3 but it becomes a bit silly at that size.

The Boox at least handle pdf perfectly fine. They have recent multicore processors and 3-4 GB of RAM so even large vector graphics aren't a problem.
With 10" or 13" you also won't run into size issues since the screen is as large as a folio.
The reason typical reasons to get them:
-doesn't feel like writing on glass
-looks like paper and not like a screen
-works in daylight without problems
-battery life is outstanding
Some people also have low self control and prefer devices without access to internet communication.
Samsung or iPad don't really offer much aside from colors and flashy animations.
