Do readers now expect fantastical racism in every fantasy setting in [current year]? Is it realistic for fantasy races to live together normally in a setting without racial prejudices coming up?

Unfortunately, in current year, any acknowledgement of specie/race differences is made racism. If I write a book with a humanoid race of long limbed humanoids with dark skin who are very fast runners, I'll get bombarded with accusations of being a racist even though I'm simply acknowledging a racial "perk"
That's why I'm writing species, not races.

Early Bakker is so kino. The whole Inrau plot, Kellhus x Cnauir plot, Akka making the connections between different factions and players, Esmi and Sarcelus, the Emperor's gamble. It's all so tight and well oiled.
Granted some of the best parts happened in Aspect Emperor, but early Bakker simply had more charisma. You can tell he wasn't as jaded and depressed as by the end of Unholy Consult, when he probably already knew that he wouldn't be able to write the No God series. It gives me the sad

I downloaded a lot of fantasy last week and just finished The Name of the Wind. I didn't overly enjoy it but wanted to at least finish it, however I won't read any more of his work. It was an easy read and I'm now unsure on what to start. I want a medieval fantasy setting with magic and possibly some level of maturity. I'm torn between something with decent prose and intensity like Prince of Nothing or Malazan, or perhaps also starting Mistborn or The Way of Kings to satisfy my easy to read urge to be entertained and it wouldn't take me long to read those.

Thoughts? It's probably best to just start whatever I want and recommendations may be difficult as I've just given you polarising examples.

Ask this 1--few threads ago, but I want to get into the wh40k universe, albeit I hate human sci, and find nearly all scifi attrociously boring, implausible (work as scientist), and way too often badly written, though the last is more subjective.

From the two replies I got- I should read ciaphas cain, the night lords, fulgrim, the first heretic, betrayer; some of these are series others standalone titles, and gaunt's ghosts, which I meticulously dl'd only to find out it's stupid milscifi human shite.
I'll give it a try though.
I found about the primarcsh 00-13, the names and covers suggest it's what I was looking for.

I also dl'd 54 audiobooks of The Horus Heresy, of which I understand the first 6--7 are essential prerequisites to all other reading-- is that so?

Is there are definitive timeline or guide or something for the nigh 4e2 novels about the whole shebang?

The other argument is that the whole plan hinges upon the certainty that it will work. The idea sounds insane. Why would it work? Why the magic number of 144,000? Where did the idea come from, and how do you know it isn't just made up to justify the omnicidal dreams of evil, deranged people? The inchoroi on Earwa are the ignorant, degenerated remnant of a remnant, why should anyone believe them?

yeah, i always expected that even if they got down to 144,000 (biblical number of the elect in revelations, btw), that it still wouldn't close the world. the inchoroi already failed on countless other planets despite reducing the populations to 12K^2; why is eärwa really so special?

i like in Bakker's writing that nothing is ever clearly certain as to being necessarily one way or another, that no single perspective is objectively true and the reader should doubt the accuracy of every character's viewpoint. he shares that with Wolfe.

1. Lots of people are OK with the gods. The fact a random slave in the middle of the great ordeal was with Yatwer and a random thane was with Gilgaol, despite the horrid stuff he was probably party to, suggests ordinary people are saved all the time. Most of these people probably would prefer eternity with their favored god and other chosen ones over oblivion.

2. Some great souls can become ciphrang themselves. These people will be happy enough to enable the damnation of others.

3. The progenitos already "solved" Tekne apparently. The Outside is the last frontier. A curious enough mind wouldn't want to be locked out of exploring this forever.

4. Most people don't want to die but they'd have to for the closure to happen.

My theory is that while the No-God was around it killed a ton of people until the inverse fire showed something besides damnation. one ongoing question that's never resolved regards the universality of damnation. we get the sense that 99% of the characters we read about are damned, with some saved by gods seemingly at random. but every damned soul we read about happen to be sinners, sorcerers, scalpers, cannibal ordealmen, etc.

for the average caste-menial farmer, dockworker, slave, etc., who lived a good and honest life, what's the likelihood they'd be saved? since it's unknown, the proposition resembles pascal's wager. it's something we face ourselves in this world, and unironically why Bakker has Christpilled so many through his vivid, unforgettable depiction of damnation.

But hey, unlike most I loved the slog of Akka's story in all four of these (maybe it's the insight into what Bakker's D&D campaign was like), and no one else seems to have a problem with the Sor/Ser/Moe adventure, so what do I know?

I think it would've worked better as a single novel, up until the plots of the ordeal, esmenet and akka come together in the end and you could have the final book for that. Obviously Rowling ripped her off, but who was really the better writer? I think Le Guin, she is truly unique as a fantasy author and even though I don't consider myself a feminist, I think her exploration of gender in the context of the genre are really worthwhile. Rowling doesn't accomplish anything half as interesting in seven books.

Just finished The Judging Eye...clarity required and spoilers ahead
- Mimaras ability is to see the morality of a situation or person?
- Mimaras chorae she initially hated due to its anti sorcery effect - however when viewed with the judging eye it is in fact extremely holy and was able to repudiate the hell gate?
- what was it exactly that caused the topos? It’s mentioned the nonmem had hundreds of human slaves sealed away but also that man betrayed the nonmem?
- if the chorae is most holy does that mean sorcery is most evil?

Also mad bants with Kelmonas, routing for you little fella

I don't think these are spoilers but stuff that should be clear by the point you've gotten to so:

>Mimaras ability is to see the morality of a situation or person?
She sees the causes and ultimate effects of damnation. The judgement of the gods on each soul.
>Mimaras chorae she initially hated due to its anti sorcery effect - however when viewed with the judging eye it is in fact extremely holy and was able to repudiate the hell gate?
Chorae negates sorcery. The gods hate sorcery because it corrodes reality in some way. Gods are cool with chorae because it restores natural order.
>what was it exactly caused the topos
Just extreme emotions. There was a lot of suffering there as there was on the battlefield where bones rose up in the original trilogy.
>sorcery is most evil
In the sense that the gods hate it, sure. Morality comes down to might makes right and the gods are mightiest.

SA VERY crackpot theory:
Kelhus is Onkis somehow. The head on a pole = the head impaled on the copper tree. If the outside is really atemporal he could've done everything the head on a pole did before dying. Onkis is described as a prophetess of the motivations of men, which sounds very Dunyain. How can Onkis be Kelhus and female both? Kelhus had a woman's soul, being a tranny. SHE was sexually attracted to Cnaiur, which is why SHE spared him before, and to Proyas, obviously. Bakker is afraid of losing the incel market he captured by offending feminists so he has been rethinking this whole angle for years.
