They're completely different. ASOIAF is essentially a giant dark soap opera with swords in not-England. Bakker's work is a cosmic inversion of Tolkien with heavy philosophical and religious undertones. I do think ASOIAF is more "entertaining," and a lighter read in general, whereas Bakker is so crushingly heavy and dark that it often strays into the absurd (something the author knows and indulges).

Sanderson doesn't deserve the hate he gets. He's a phenomenal worldbuilder, and his magic systems are fascinating - so fascinating that most ya authors and all upcoming witters are trying to copy him.
His critics may argue that his prose is weak, but it's not. Basic? Yes. But weak? No. Sanderson's prose is based around painting a picture in your head with as little words as possible. He's not trying to be flowery or poetic, and he's not trying to break new ground in the medium. He's simply trying to tell a damn good story, which he does, by brilliantly executing tropes in a satisfactory manner.
Sanderson is easily a top 10 fantasy writer of the current era, bakker autism be damned.

This is what is really going on in this general:

Sandersoys:
>Most of them are invested in the Cosmere. (Someone here spent a lot of money, or so they claim)
>They almost always reply to posts criticizing Sanderson, even shit-posting.
>Some of them keep falling for the same bait non-stop.
I suspect that one of them is actually a Cosmere YouTuber or someone "relevant" in the 17th Shard.
Can't see any other reason for them to be so feisty.

Anti-Sander-schizos:
>Only purpose is to shit-post in order to trigger the Sandersoys.
>Their tactics and pasta are getting old and the creativity is dwindling significantly.
>This will keep going on until the Sandersoys simply stop replying.
>Probably they were the ones who started using Bakker as an argument to dismiss Sanderson's writing style.
>They probably read Sanderson.

Bakkerfags:
>Refugees from the other dying SA communities.
>Most are only here to discuss the series and meme post about it.
>By far the largest /sffg/ community.
>Their meme spamming is getting out of control.
They will never go away. This is the new online Bakker community.

Anti-Bakkers:
>More often than not, they got filtered by the prose and couldn't read the books. This makes them incredibly defensive and dismissive of Bakker. Very rarely do they win an actual argument when trying to dismiss Bakker.
>High chance of being ESLs.
>Shit-posters, like the Anti-Sander-schizos, although less effective because they were probably too stupid to read Bakker in the first place.
>Some are Sandersoys that got dragged in, but otherwise have nothing against Bakker.

The only reason why there's even a Sanderson vs Bakker discussion is because they're both popular and some of the above can occasionally overlap.

The rest of the thread runs smoothly if you have the correct filters. There's that guy that complains about E. William Brown and another that shits on Martin for some reason. That's about it.

Yes, tailoring the writing solely to appeal to a target demographic is considered selling out. It'd be the same as Tolkien suddenly making Galadriel have giant titties and dress like a whore and flirt with everyone just for the sake of a "neckbeard" audience.

Anyone here read the Witcher series? Is it any good?
I read half of "The Last Wish", the first book in the series, a couple of years ago and I did not enjoy it. Mostly because it was an anthology of short stories with very little depth in terms of characters, plot, and theme. However, I'm attempted to give it another chance because they've recieve so much praise; and I've heard that the later books are more serial in nature.

No. To be more specific, the short stories are decent enough, but aside from that it's a pretty poorly written series. In my experience there's two types of people who unironically think they're good, people who love the games and refuse to accept that the source material is mediocre and more recently fans of that garbage Netflix adaptation who generally are the usual twitter/Tumblr types who wouldn't know good writing if it fucked them up the ass.

I stand by what I said, Martin is an excellent writer who excells in writing characters, a highly detailed and immersive world, complex political plotlines, and shocking plot twists. I've just finished the second Prince of Nothing book. Cnaur being a tsundere while getting along with Proyas and Saubon was great. I liked the setting and the characters in the series so far.
But Khelus is a mary sue. Everything always goes along with him, and that got old fast. Dune also had a prophet protagonist, and it wasn't this bad. Does it get better?

The exchange between Cnaiür and Conphas at the climax of Darkness That Comes Before illustrates this extremely well and I highly encourage you to grab an epub for yourself and read that segment at least, that or Cnaiür and Moënghus about halfway through. The difference between cultures in Martin's mind never grows larger than
>uhhh these guys like slaves more and these guys like horses more

No? He's significantly more complex than that. Jamie is the perfect example nature vs nurture; he's born relatively pure, contrary to popular belief. He's kind, he's brave, and he's honorable - all traits befitting of an arthurian era knight and yet he changes.
His father mentally abuses and gaslights him, arguably leading into Jamie's pathological relationship with Cersei. Cersei corrupts him and drags him into moral depravity, depravity that he cannot deny because he loves and wants to protect her. And when Jamie meets his heroes? He's shellshocked? The knights of legend - warriors of unprecedent swordsmanship, chilvary, and honor, are nothing more than glorified thugs upholding the rule of a tyrant. Through peer pressure and a lack of power, Jamie was forced to be a bystander as he watched these atrocities unfold before him; but even Jamie could not stand as the King planned to execute a whole city's population of people. He broke his oath - his very honor to save the people and he became an outcast for it. He did what none of the "heroes" of his era could do and he was ridiculed and hated for it, treated as no better than a traitor when he was the true hero of the day.
The only people who didn't treat him like scum were his family but three people is not enough for a person's mental stability. Which is why he fell back into his relationship with Cersei, she understood him, she loved him. And because of this he gave in to the nurturing of his environment and became a "monster". He did everything to protect her and his children - though it stressed him to hell and back since he wasn't a bad person.
This is why, when Jamie loses his hand - his warrior's pride and his connection with Cersei for months, he becomes a changed man. Because he's finally grown in an environment where he cannot be corrupted. Which is why he rejects his abusive relationship with Cersei and begins to take a path towards redemption.

Spiderlight has a hilarious villain. Basically an all-powerful sorcerer who can manipulate reality who is bored out of his mind, so he creates light and darkness and has them fight for thousands of years. He was both the first hero of light, whose actions and image turned into a religion, and the dark lord. He starts making up vague and meaningless prophecies for the heroes of light to solve, and then rolls on the floor laughing when they arrive with whatever retarded object they think is effective against him. He kills them all and takes the form of whichever one he finds most interesting and returns from the war as another hero who defeated the dark lord. Repeat. His evil citadel extends into the sky, yet his throne room is on the first floor next to the kitchen, which the heroes always ignores and only finds on the way back down.
