This doesn't explain conspiracy theorists, because people who believe mainstream explanations and people who believe conspiracy theories are both subject to this dynamic, any reasoning abilities they have usually follow their beliefs as rationalization and attacks against the opponent rather than informing the beliefs in the first place.

The main difference between the two is simply that conspiracy theorists don't trust mainstream society for whatever reason. This is not an unreasonable position in and of itself, the social consensus is historically often nonsense, but the conspiracy theorist doesn't stop at skepticism, he instead latches onto alternative authority sources and follows them just as mindlessly, because remaining in a state of suspended judgment and perpetual doubt is not something most people find comfortable.

Many conspiracy theories are more self-contradictory than the mainstream narratives they are trying to replace. Identifying internal contradictions between beliefs, and having a ground of very basic priors that you don't question, inoculates against most conspiracy theories, though you mostly just end up at 'I can't say which if any of these narratives is closest to truth'.

Individual people are practically blind and rely for somewhat accurate information about reality on a huge network of people and institutions. When they start to perceive that this network is giving them false information they are forced to separate from it and create new ones. If you try to challenge him on his claims he will shout that whatever evidence you're citing is fabricated by "the government" to get you to believe what they want. What got me the most was how he continued to believe this even as that condition destroyed his body and resulted in him constantly being hospitalised and requiring the highest grade antibiotics. Even as he was losing toes he was still having 2 L bottles of coke smuggled into the hospital.

He has since lost a leg to it which combined with his obesity means he’s essentially lost all mobility - all while still holding onto his beliefs that diabetes is just a scam condition made up by doctors
