RG was pretty tough. To start with he fought through the whole of the First World War as an officer.

But also at school he got bullied all the time because a) he had some German ancestry and b) he wrote poetry. Eventually he joined the boxing club and found he had quite the knack for it. He knocked about six people out and then didn't get bullied so much.

>Char was born in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue in the Vaucluse department of France, the youngest of four children of Emile Char and Marie-Thérèse Rouget, where his father was mayor and managing director of the Vaucluse plasterworks. He spent his childhood in Névons, the substantial family home completed at his birth, then studied as a boarder at the school of Avignon and subsequently, in 1925, a student at L'École de Commerce de Marseille, where he read Plutarch, François Villon, Racine, the German Romantics, Alfred de Vigny, Gérard de Nerval and Charles Baudelaire. He was tall (1.92 m) and was an active rugby player. After briefly working at Cavaillon, in 1927 he performed his military service in the artillery in Nîmes.

Half the replies are soldiers even though the prompt is “beat up”— not every hardened WWI vet was an expert hand-to-hand fighter. Also, Hemingway’s “boxing” was apparently a load of horse shit, and he’s actually quite fat with little arms. Kerouac was a real meathead so maybe he could beat me up.
Hemingway, even at his prime, would lose in a fight with me. I probably bench his body weight now when he was my age. Probably not when he was older because his gut’s so huge, but he would’ve been slow.

Mostly because the so-called 'man's man' that Hemingway claimed to be couldn't even hold his own against a boy who was (at the time) an effeminate theater fop.
