>modern english translation

No such thing exists, because nobody ever thought of translating English into English.

You just need to translate your brain from stupid to smart.

i've tried reading that many times, but end up losing interest. the dated english is too cumbersome for me. I want the side by side so i can have both the poetry of milton, and the modern english to refer to.

No, I have read the book back in high school. And seriously I can't imagine how you can be having difficulty.

Dude, it's from the 1660s. This isn't Beowulf or even Chaucer. You need glosses and notes, not a modern translation.

The Hawkes edition (Barnes and Noble Classics, $8) is good and cheap.

I prefer a novel format as it's easier on the eyes and I'm a speedreader, but do you seriously have a hard time understanding written English?
