First time I'm hearing this. Why do you think it's good? What's its best feature?

>> No.17577673

I only recently bought it but i read that it's an inspiration for Neil Gaiman and it's similar to Gormenghast (maybe less dreary and gothic)

The Quiet Earth by Craig Harrison

It's weirdly engrossing in how readily it shifts its tone and plot. In a boilerplate novel the stakes are reset and raised at the end of the first and second act. The Quiet Earth does it about six times before the end, but it's ~250 pages

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I've heard a lot about it on this board, yet I've never read it. It's historical fiction, isn't it?

>> No.17579540

>>17579489
Yes, The Long Ships is historical fiction with minor fantastical elements. Not outright fantasy or magic, just some slightly outlandish happenings that make you feel like you're listening to a storyteller.
I mention it because OP didn't specify sffg anyway, and it's just so damn good. Most fantasy novels, and to a degree scifi, focus on adventure and discovery. Well, you won't get any better, more realistic description of adventure and discovery before the invention of the railroad than The Long Ships.

>> No.17579590

>>17579540
I agree. And it fits within the "speculative fiction" category, so I don't see any problem.

besides, more and more, I'm finding myself getting closer and closer to reading historical fiction --probably because of what's popular around these days don't match with my taste.

Thank you. And with a combination of Fantasy and historical fiction, I purchased something called
>The Hammer and the Cross
An alternate historical fiction, maybe you might like that.

following the adventure\discovery thread Rafaeil Sabatini's books are very fun to read

I think I've seen that, or a series like it, on the shelf at the used bookstore I go to. I don't know why I'm fine with soft scifi, obviously fine with fantasy, but I can't enjoy historical fiction or alternate history unless it's realistic. And that doesn't just mean devoid of fantastical elements, that means a logical progression of events faithful to the historical reality.
Looking at the map in the website you linked, seems like Shef allies with Alfred the Great? He'll have a lot of trouble avoided Chalcedonian Christianity if he wants to stay allied to Anglo-Saxons.

Looked him up, he's written quite a bit. Any book you'd consider the best from him?

I've read this, the revenge story barely comes into it from what I remember. It's more about empire building.

It's pretty short but it's a fun book.

>> No.17582134

The revenge story is absent for most of the book because he has to hunt for the guy in space. Its the main characters motivation for leaving his planet and comes back into it at the end

Does Ishiguro count as /sffg/ or is he more prose fiction? A lot of his works do contain elements of both sci-fi and fantasy but he feels more like prose ficiton

Not related to the thread topic, but I reread Blindsight over the last couple days. Enjoyed it more on that second read.

>>17577344
I read it a couple of years ago. Has this really nice dreamlike quality that keeps it light and mysterious. Really evocative overall. I should read it again.
