As a college exercise, we were given a quote from Hamlet and tasked with making a short story related to the quote. The one I received was "Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder" and, as good as this quote is, I can't think of a god damn thing. Anyone mind lending some ideas for a short story?

Yeah I was going to say do a story about osama's revenge. Like have a terrorist who wants to revenege osama go to a circus where he wants to blow up the crowd. But he becomes fixated on the scene around him: the elephants dancing, the clowns scaring the children, the ring leader in the middle obscured by the cornucopia of the circus. The terrorist decides not to blow it all up, or maybe he'll do it in the parking lot. Then ironically he chokes on popcorn and dies. The End. Hello Pushcart!

the murders have long been completed. a young man killed a person or group of persons in an accident. he maybe was injured or maybe not, but didn't get charged for some reason. do a short story on how he lives his day-to-day life, and how to go on living is his revenge. spin the idea of the quote.

1. Tell the story in the first-person omniscient.
2. Have the protagonist (the one telling the story) get everyone's attention during some storytime: a long road trip, a campfire, a drinking session, a police interview room
3. (Think "Usual Suspects" if it helps. You want that kind of tension and atmosphere. Your protagonist is smarter than everyone, even the reader)
4. Have a scene where he's doing some thing seemingly nefarious. Have him do something violent to someone. Suddenly twist the reader's affections for him by having him explain WHY...this person was involved in the "most unnatural murder" of someone dear to him.
5. Tell the tale, with him hunting down and avenging his murdered loved-one. Go for the sympathy angle, with his victims revealing more and more of the gruesome details of how they murdered this person.
6. By the end of the story, the reader will have completely empathized with the protagonist, and his avenging murders, because they've practically lived the original crime through the victims' confessions.

And ends up will having to have will did commit the murder in the first place, after undergoing cosmetic surgery to prevent fucking with his own life, and it turns out he's the guy he wanted revenge on!

inb4 Heinlein did it.

It's a school project, it doesn't have to be completely original, besides, all these original ideas suck anyway. Focus on making it a good story, and nobody will care you ripped off Lazarus Long's works.
