Hi /Lit/ I'm interested in reading and studying the bible as a non-christian. Which version is the best and least biased? is the Jewish version of the bible the most accurate?

the NASB version is the most accurate english word-for-word, also Robert Alter's literary translation of the Old Testament is really nice, has commentary too

Try either the New Oxford Annotated Bible as >>17550156 mentioned or the HarperCollins study bible (this is the one Bart Ehrman recommends).

>Illuminating the Jewishness of God's Word
That sounds psychotic.

>Here goy I made this book for you
>It's so you understand that Jewishness is eternal and superior and that from Jewishness comes god, not just our god, but your god
Jews are unironically and literally Satan's choses monsters in human form

I think the Alter bible is printed on normal paper (it is in 3 volumes) try the David Bentley Hart translation for the new testament.

The "Complete Jewish Bible" is a messianic Jewish Bible i.e. Protestant Christian

For the Hebrew Bible I would recommend the Jewish Study Bible published by Oxford Uni Press, or for the complete Bible the New Oxford Annotated Bible, also by Oxford.

I concur. Every modern translation draws it's inspiration for translation from two awful texts, thinking just because their a little bit older, their better than the thousands of other manuscripts.

Lol the KJV New Testament heavily relies on the text of Erasmus which was hastily produced and has a big chunk of Revelation not based on any Greek manuscript but translated from Jerome's Vulgate into Greek.

Judaism is separate from Christianity. Moreover, Orthodox Christianity is different from Catholics/other schismatics.

>> No.17551929

>>17551921
As for less biased, probably the Orthodox one. Because it's less affected by ethnical or secular bias like the other two.

Depends on why you want to read it.

KJV is good for understanding literary and cultural influence in the anglosphere.

NIV or other similar translations are good for accuracy.

Get an interlinear bible. The edition I have not only has the Greek interlaced with a very literal translation, but on the margins it has a more readable translation. You don't have to know any Greek to get a lot of use out of it, but if you do want to learn they can be extremely useful early on. It's my go to English bible when I need one to check my own reading.

Is there commentary or something in case you are not familiar with certain references, is it a study bible? I tried searching it on amazon and the only one I found matching your description is $500, can you link your version?

If you want commentary then get the Ignatius bible.

Do you want to study Bible, or do you want to learn about Christianity? Because, frankly, while Bible is a compilation of words of several Apostles and is important, it doesn't have everything.

Thanks, anon, I think this bible is great, It has the Greek and Hebrew text, the only issue seems to be the spacing between the English words (judging from the pictures I saw). The price is also cheap so I don't mind getting this with a study bible

That one is just the New Testament. There's certainly other versions if you want the OT too that are done in the same style. They're obviously a little more expensive though.

Lit is really confused on this subject, and these threads are always embarrassing to me because it exposes how little people on this board actually know about the subjects they talk so much out of their asses about

The NRSV or the HarperCollins Study Bible are the fold standards in terms of scholarly rigor, clarity, and accuracy. For the Hebrew Bible, go with the JPS Tanakh.

>> No.17553021

Thanks for your input, is the Tanakh just the OT ?
