/lit/, I'm picking reading back up again and so I'm using it as an excuse to be pretentious and post on /lit/.

What the fuck, Lovecraft? All I hear is that you're one of the greatest modern writers, and that you wrote in a prose-peotry, and then I read fucking Dagon and Nyarlathotep? You spend too much time describing the wrong things! The point of your stories is the plot - this is really obvious by the whole "haha what if the origin of white man was that Africans fucked some apes with white fur" stuff - but spend all your time describing your characters that we never see again! What the fuck, man? The Call of Cthulu better be fucking good because you've disappointed me so far.

That said I've only read about half a dozen of his stories so far.

Lovecraft thread.

Does anyone say that Lovecraft was one of the greatest modern writers? That sounds all kinds of crazy to me.

missing the point. it wasn't lovecraft's writing ability that makes him so enduring ('cuz he outright sucked when it came to plotting and characterization), It was the IDEAS he was playing with, the blasphemous notions he asserted about humanity's place in the universe that makes him important. It is an uphill battle to work your way through his writings (what with the purple prose and overt racism), but well worth it if you're patient.

He isn't one of the greatest modern writers, but read 'The Color Out of Space,' if you haven't already. That story is great.

Lovecraft is the greatest writer since Shakespeare. Your heads are all made of niggers, now.

Lovecraft perfected what his predecessors has done for centuries. Namely the cosmic horror genre.

In a nutshell.

The guy was a pretty bad writer over all.

This. Just this. There's better authors when it comes to writing ability, flow, description (although Lovecraft is an excellent describer in his own right), but the ideas are fantastic.
