I have watched almost every classic movie about it, e.g. Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon etc. and was wondering whether there are novels which can come close to these masterpieces. I would appreciate some recommendations, thanks, anons.

The Things They Carried comes to mind

Dispatches by Michael Herr is probably the best thing I ever read about the war in Vietnam but it’s reportage not a novel.

They stole a scene from Dispatches for Apocalypse Now.

Wtf is the name of the one where the guy decides to walk home from Vietnam because he figures that's as easy as serving a tour?

You should read the book that inspired Apocalypse Now, "Heart of Darkness". It's set in Africa during the early 20th century though

Like most of the other anons here I can't recommend any fiction, but memoirs are going to be a safe bet. In particular I remember liking Karl Marlantes' What It's Like to Go to War, and for a non American POV: A Vietcong Memoir - by Truong Nhu Tang
