/lit/ I'm going to be honest. I love my large, hardcover, rule moleskine. It's the first one I've owned and it's wonderful. Nothing sets it apart from the cheaper books any more than cheap knock off electronics vs expensive brand name electronics. It has a nicer feel, the pages smell wonderful and my pen glides smoothly across them like it's ice skating.

What do you like to write in /lit/ ?

Also, does anyone have the 'so you want to buy a notebook' image?

I'm considering making something similar like this for mine. I have no leather working skill but the internet is always helpful for that stuff and I have half a cow hide not being put to any use. Except of course, it would be big enough for the large size of my book and I'd probably have a specific spot to put my iPod.

I've used a moleskine as a walletfor the last two years because I was always losing wallets, but never a notebook, but man those FUCKING POCKETS - I've had four or five now, and every one I've had to patch the poket up with fucking duck tape. I don't even have that uch in there - couple of bank cards, Diving licence and driving licence, and my medical insurance card. EVERY SINGLE FUCKING ONE BROKE. I resent paying 18 euros for shit that breaks the same way every fucking time.

I still bought another one though, only I bought a new wallet as well

+1 for Moleskine.

I hate to tell you this, but they used to be even better made. I got into them on the tail end of that, five years ago. My first three or four that I filled (about every 1.5 months) are noticeably better made, were when I was using them, and never had any QC issues are premature bookmark detaching or anything you sometimes get since.

They're still the best out there, but you missed out on something I barely got to catch.

When it comes to notebooks I'm very particular about features, none of which Moleskin provide.

>ring bound
Allows for an easy writing surface whereveer you are
>hardback
softcovers are flimsy, and it ties into the better writing surface
>blank pages
I fucking loathe lined paper, i find it throttling to creativity
>thick paper
because I write in ink and not ball point pen I require something that can handle it

>> No.1750847

A moleskine is no more than a talisman of tacky artists who think the creak of a cardboard spine and the snap of a gumband invoke creative power.

Actually, Moleskine's sketch books qualifies for all of them (except rings, but I'll elaborate on that in the next sentence). Moleskines are bounded in such a way that two pages form one flat surface when opened, beats rings in my opinion.

>> No.1750875

>>1750861

Considering I frequently write walking around, ring binding is a necessity.

Plus the paper is generally higher quality. Moleskins are pretty much just brand name garbage. They dont even have mole skin anymore

You seem displeased with something. No one here stated that they're magical or essential, to me, they're just the best notebooks around. Of course, knowing that Steinbeck and Hemingway also used former incarnations of this notebook, does add some novelty to it, but you'd be a fool if you consider that as a bad thing.

>> No.1750918

Moleskine fags are the absolute worst. Most of them never even use the damn thing, just lugging them around to look cool and fit in.

A real writer will write wherever they can, just grabbing the first thing as an idea comes into their head. If its a $1 Hello Kitty scribblepad so be it, the paper doesnt matter its what you write on it.

>> No.1750979

Ted, please.

We both know that moleskines have been made into talismans. Maybe you don't fall for it, but many writers do. Doubtless Steinbeck would've penned the Grapes of Wrath on toilet paper if he had to.

But I do have way more stacks of filled-in blank papers and post-its than stacks of Moleskines.
Some people are just interested in aesthetics, the clean-cut look of this particular one does it for me, it also gives a certain predefined worth, forcing you to take more care of your writings (regarding that, somehow, half of my loose papers end up heavily creased underneath my bed).
If I had to write on toilet paper, my writings would probably end up in the toilet, I've already used too many regular printing sheets to wipe my ass this year, because one of my new housemates had terminated whole rolls of tp with unanticipated explosive diarrhea, I'd rather walk around with an odorous arse than tear apart my notebook.

>>1750979
That's just as obnoxious as making up your opinion around a band solely based on the fan base. Even if they believe the Moleskine improves their writing, what harm does it do? No one forces you to hang around with them, no sane publisher will be more eager to pick a writer that utilises Moleskines than one who uses a brandless notebook (can't guarantee you can get picked by that sane publisher if you write on toilet paper though).

>> No.1751271

Are the pages of the moleskin notebooks thicker than average? Because I find it quite annoying when the writing gets clearly visible through the page whenever I write with liquid ink pens.

I think the Moleskine are all around 60gsm paper. That being said I have no issue using a Lamy Safari 1.1 italic nib to write in them (no bleed/show, feathering).
I have also used a Zequenz pocket; the paper quality is not that great, but the design is.
The small Rhodia pocket notebooks are cheap and the paper is 80gsm. A little slow on ink dry times though.
I am looking into the Zeit Vektor refillable system next.

>mfw I slept a full 9 hours and this thread is back on the front page when I check

I'm actually a little bit surprised. /lit/ always likes to break out the pretentious card and bash anyone who says they like moleskines, but there's a fair bit of support here.

My first moleskine type notebook was actually a Piccadilly (because here in Aus a genuine moleskine runs close to $40) and I was quite happy with it. But about 2 months into owning it and filling about a third of it, the front and rear covers started to peel off their backing cardboard (it was a soft cover as the store had no hard cover ones when I wanted to buy a notebook). I was incredibly butthurt and will never buy another Piccadilly.
