To add to this: of course Muslim scholars are going to look for a way to explain away certain issues. The problem is - aside from my earlier point about the issue of metaphor itself in the Koran, the passage refers to Zul-Qarnain and the muddy spring in exactly the same manner. You cannot claim one is metaphorical while the other is literal. There is nothing to suggest that the earliest followers of the Koran did not take it literally, nor is there anything to suggest that Muhammad meant for it to be taken as symbolic - all signs point to the opposite, in fact.
