1746920 No.1746920 [Reply] [Original]

Anyone want to join me in reading Infinite Jest over the summer? I'd like to do something like Infinite Summer. We'd read around 70-80 pages a week for three months. Once a week we'd discuss what we read on either /lit/ or IRC.

The pace is intentionally slow to allow people who are doing other things over the summer and/or want to read other books at the same time to participate.

So, anyone up for it?

From Wikipedia....
"Infinite Jest is a 1996 novel by David Foster Wallace that presents a dystopian vision of North America in the near future. The intricate narrative treats elements as diverse as junior tennis, substance abuse and recovery programs, depression, child abuse, family relationships, advertising and popular entertainment, film theory, and Quebec separatism."

Before we start on this, we should make sure that all editions of IJ aren't different from each other. Like, different pages, corrections, etc. If there are differences, we need to agree upon an edition.

>> No.1747219

I've read it before, but I was thinking of rereading it after I finish The Pale King, so perhaps I'll join you. I've turned into a bit of a DFW fanboy over the past year, and I really regret that I was a year late for Infinite Summer.

>> No.1747221

>>1747213

According to the Infinite Summer blog, all published editions have consistent pagination:
http://infinitesummer.org/archives/168

>> No.1747232

>>1747213
I was thinking the same thing. However, I checked out Infinite Summer's How to Read Inifnite Jest article ( http://infinitesummer.org/archives/215 ) and they directly reference page 223 and page 37. I'd assume this that all US editions are the same (or at least close enough).

If someone can confirm or deny this, it'd be appreciated.

Worst case scenario, I plan on listing chapter names alongside page numbers, so anyone can follow along.

Thanks ^_^. Any extra discussion would benefit.

It sounds like a good read and I might pick it up to share and discuss, but am confused about the explanation of the why of the endnotes.

<<The novel includes several hundred endnotes which explain or expound upon points in the story. In an interview with Charlie Rose, Wallace characterized their use as a method of disrupting the linearity of the text while maintaining some sense of narrative cohesion.>>

Why would the author want to disrupt the 'linearity of the text'?

Anyone care to explain the explanation for a /b/ fag new to /lit/?

In return, a little love.

>> No.1747550

>>1747353
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure some authors wanted to do that because humans don't think linearly.

>> No.1747564
