no. no body should waste time with these shit tier books....
you might consider these toilet paper level books - problem is to harsh for anus - only after having read all classics. there is nothing you can gain from these modern non scientific books.

read greeks, romans, arabs, islamists, orientals, medieval and only then go for degenerate smug modern lit

Not really. Average at best.

On a moment to moment prose level, no. On a grand ideas, cosmological scale, yes. It’s unparalleled. If only Wolfe was a better writer, it would be a truly canonical classic.

The prose is good in that Severian's voice is interesting but I also don't know what you're comparing the prose to so I guess that's a fair criticism

Wait, really? I bought the first one years ago but never got around to it, so you mean to tell me I won't ever have a matching set when I finally read it and want to know what happens?

You're participating in a long-discussed argument, OP. /lit/ has a very factional opinion of Gene Wolfe and his books. To get an idea of this go here: https://4chanlit.fandom.com/wiki/Gene_Wolfe

Personally, I'm reading Shadow Of The Torturer right now, and boy it's mesmerizingly beautifully written. I don't think I've ever read a sublimely beautiful Sci-fi/Fantasy book written like the Book Of the New Sun. Read this series, OP, it's a heavily underrated masterpiece. Ignore the normie plebs in this thread and their baseless dismissals of Gene Wolfe.

They only talk about R Scott Bakker now. Also Gene Wolfe is one of those writers who appeals to outer lit.

Overrated. “You’ve betrayed everything you are, young Slitherin. HOWEVER, here, take this magic sword and go to the next town, and don't forget to get your ass kicked in the arena by a shopkeeper and meet and fuck your mother for some reason.”

>> No.17470966

well, its an almost unbelievably good fantasy novel. In part due to its masquerade as "science-fantasy", in which masquerade the book pretty much finds it apotheosis. The cosmological implications of the narrative like >>17469227 says are also a huge part of its sublimity. There's a reason he's talked about on the same level with Tolkien, except doesn't share much literary interest in confluence with Tolkien except for certain Catholic thought-traps such as Faith and (Au / Mo)narchy. Ice-cold classic, really.

The reason why book of the new sun is science fantasy is because it's drawing from the pulps rather than from the same genealogy as high fantasy like Tolkien

I read that Wolfe hired a private tutor to learn Greek on his own in order to write the Soldier series.
